my daily commute is 1 mile (i know-i should walk it). Takes a minimum of 7 to 8 miles (or about 12-15 minutes of easy does it drive time) when the ambient temperature is around 50° to get the coolant temperature up to 195°. My question is what are the consequences of not getting fluids up to operating temperatures? With winter coming up here in my area; i could be putting on alot of miles taking in the scenery(ok by me) but i do not have the time, especially when i go home for lunch. I could let it idle during lunch but over 5 minutes at a time is frowned upon by DC. Never had any problems with my gassers.

I never shut mine down after a mile and have a bad habit of letting mine diesel for long periods of time (30-60 minutes) ... ... ... ... ... this is my second and no problems yet!

After a long idle period, you will notice a coolant temperature drop ... ... ... ... so, when you get back in HAMMER it to keep the cylinder walls fram glazing :)

The most common problems associated with short runs are oil contamination and excessive exhaust system wear.

The oil problem stems from the fact that the trucks engine never gets hot enough to boil off the water that collects in a cooling engine. Your short 7-8 minuet run is not long enough to get the truck up to operating temperature and hence the cold oil situation. There is really nothing you can do about it, while you are at work. The lunch time idle ideal will not work, they just don't build enough heat at an idle. The best thing you could do is to take a weekly trip, go somewhere so that you run the truck at highway speeds for a good 20 -30 minuets. This long trip will burn off the water and help alot, you can not help that you live so close to work, many would like that problem. The exhaust system suffers from basically the same thing, the exhaust does not get heated long enough to burn off the water that is held inside. Your long trip on the week ends will help with both situations. Expect the exhaust to rust out sooner then normal, but hey it gives you a reason to install a larger better sounding(?) exhaust. For the oil, I would just bump up my scheduled maintenance intervals, again. . another excuses to work on the Dodge. Good luck.
