I'm at 15K miles and it's time for the fuel filter change. Considering using this as an excuse to install a Prime Loc fuel filter relocation kit.

My questions for those who have installed one...

Does this make future filter changes easier? cheaper?

Does this improve performance?

Will this new gizmo under the hood block access to other important things?

Is it easy for a non wrench head to install? Or should I just pay for an hour of shop time?

Thanks in advance for any responses or other related advice.

I put the Prime-Loc on my rig about the same time as the Horton Fan. I believe the polished mounting plate on the Second Generation is somewhat larger than on my first (93). Yes access to the vacuum/power steering pump is somewhat more difficult and the adjustment of the injector pump is obstructed. The fuel filter is within easy reach and changing the filter is no longer messy. I don't know that it would be cheaper to have the filter changed by a shop as they probably have a flat rate regardless but it sure simplifies the job for the owner.

My opinions on your Prime-Loc questions...

1. definitely makes filter changes easier; also, the Fleetguard filter for the Prime-Loc is cheaper than the stock filter (at least for '99 model)

2. no, it does nothing for performance; it's strictly for ease of maintenenace

3. it doesn't limit access to anything you need to access regularly

4. it is not hard to install, but is tedious; took me several hours. i have big hands, and they were cut and scratched pretty good by the time i was finished.

besides the good looks of the polished mounting plate and the easier filter changes, the best benefit of the system is not having to guess when to replace the filter. you can connect (2) fuel pressure gages and monitor the delta pressure across the filter. when it gets high, it's time to change the filter.

overall, the system is well engineered, the hardware is of excellent quality.

Eric,

Try changing the stock filter on your model year 2000 one time before you start changing things - I think you'll find it fairly straight forward. The 2000 and 2001 have a different fuel filter than previous years and are MUCH easier to service.

Use a six-point SOCKET (inch and an eighth if my memory is working) to remove the top of the filter. Some people have cracked/broken the plastic cap using the half-inch square hole in the center of the cap. I saw a TSB cautioning against the use of the center hole to remove the cap. The TSB also mentioned that the square hole was being changed to round to remove the temptation.

The MAXIMUM torque on the cap is 25 foot-pounds - I use less.

Nope.....
Can't recommend this product for a 24 V...

Maybe on a 12 V it's worth the risk... .
