Hello all, this is my first post. I have been a lurker here for a while and my children just bought me a subscription this Christmas.

I would like to ask for your help. I have a 2001 2500 Extended Cab, and the console lid won't stay shut. I have been to the dealer and they have replaced the console and it still does not close. Currently, I have it jury-rigged with a velcro strap holding it shut. Please give me any suggestions on how to remedy this situation.

Hi TB,

Might try to raise the post the lock slips over. Use pliers or vise grips and turn the post counter clockwise to raise it. If it still won't lock closed you'll have to troubleshoot the locking latch.

Have fun. I bought Geno's Cup Smoothie and with it in I couldn't get my lid to close. So I tried Geno's suggested method. Vice grips on the post. DIDN'T BUDGE! Even my dad tried it to no effect. Oh well the cup smoothie has since come out since my Ultimate Console is on its way!Oo.

Kind of nice to know I ain't the only one with this !@#$%^ frustrating problem... ... ...

I'll have to try the suggestions here and see if that will solve the problem in my truck.

maybe you should remove some of the fudge round wrappers, diesel receipts, and excessive smoke tickets. it sure helped the operation of mine. :D ;)

I had this same prob because the stock units tabs all broke off so I warranteed the console. New base wouldn't stay locked or if you slammed it too hard then it was a pain to get open... . back to the dealer. New lid... . same scenario, back to the dealer. New base and lid... . nope, back to the dealer. Again new base and lid..... f*** it, I'll fix it myself.

The post has a locking nut that needs to be loosened before most can be removed in most cases. By prying on the plastic at the front of the base you can get it to pop off. Be careful as the plastic tabs can break. Then I loosened the nut and removed the stud. Once out I detrmined that the stud is too large of a diameter and wouldn't fit into the lid. Great! So I took the stud to the grinder and reduced the overall diameter so it would fit into the lid. Then took a file and cleaned the grove out then reinstalled and adjusted the height. YEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW. It works. Now if only the dealer would get it right the first time.

It might be possible that if you could get someone to hold the lock in the unlock position then you might be able to save time by running a slightly larger drill through the hole in the lid. Just don't know whether there is enough material after drilling the lid. Maybe someone else would know whether this works. :)

Funny thing today. . went out and got one of the "slimline" trim type prybars (cause I didn't want to make big marks)... stuck under the lid and it opened right up before I put much pressure on it!!!!! Like it didn't want me to mess with it!!!!!!!!!! Think it's got a mind of it's own!!!! Worked it a bit after. . no problems. DUH... ..... Maybe I'll have to put some stinking grease on the post. . , or velcro!!
