Never posted before but have enjoyed reading the posts.

We have a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel.

Truck started knocking/vibrating/smoking. Dodge dealer says contaminated fuel. Could this be from new ULSD fuel? Dealer wanted $6K to clean tank, replace fuel injectors, fuel pump, etc. Truck only has 58,000 miles. Is dealer ripping us off? Truck runs but afraid of further/future damage.

Thanks for any help you can give.

What good is the fuel filter if contaminated fuel took out the whole injection system? I would definitely get a second opinion. I hope they are wrong for your sake.

Did you address the open return ports on top of the fuel tank? That's a likely source of contamination. Can't believe that Dodge hasn't recalled all of them to take care of that problem. If they are open I'd be sure to point that out to the dealer that the problem is their (Dodge's) fault for leaving them open.

Sounds like a lot of replacing parts for contaminated fuel not to mention the price to do it.

I don't think ULSD fuel would alone would cause it the sludge it cleans out of lines and tanks should be stopped by the fuel filter.

If you have the same fuel in it I would have it analyzed or at least find out what it was contaminated with. You mite be able use some fuel cleaner to clean or kill it.

Bruce; what was in the filter when you or them took it out? Depending on what it was, you may be able to pour something like seafoam or redline diesel fuel cleaner in and run it through to see what happens. Also keep checking the filter to see if it fills up again.

As far as the dealer is concerned, well,,,well tell them to ah (I'm trying to keep this clean) tell them that your not the sucker they think you are!!!

For dealer type questions and issues, contact John Holmes of Carson City Dodge, that's in Nevada. He'll steer you straight

Good luck, and keep us posted. Michael.

I had the same thing happen to me when I changed the filter and forgot to drain the bowl. My dad's friend is a mechanic that I trust, I thought I blew the motor from the sound of it. He said he put 3 bottles of injector cleaner in it take it home and change the filter AFTER you drain the bowl. I did this and filled up with known good fuel and he said take it out the bypass and run the hell out of it. Believe it or not it took 3 tanks of fuel and additives/cleaner to clear it up but it's been fine ever since.

Have you changed the filter before this or since it happened?

Well Im calling BS on the dealer. Seems that contaminated fuel is a easy cop out for the dealers. They tolda buddy the same thing when they found red fuel in his truck. They said they were going to red flag his truck, so I told him to get it out of there and bring it in. The probem with his was the transmission but as soon as they saw the fuel they were all over that. Tried to get him to buy new injectors and pump.
