Mercedes Diesel Wagon 4x4 is a runner

'35 Dodge 1.5 ton

Well Paramedic school is finally over except for the state test that I might not need to take assuming I passed National Registry and the results get back in time to know. A lovely way to spend almost 8 months...

I have blasted the 4x4 frame and painted it with Eastwood's Corroless paint. I bought a nice rustfree '78 Ford 2x4 Super Camper Special out of Portland OR and had it shipped in. The shipping was higher than the truck! It is still sitting on the trailer after about 2 months. Can't really drive it because the engine is about to grenade.

Today I set an old cab on the frame and began fitting the 6bta, after cutting the front cross-member to 1/2 of its original height. I may just end up building a whole new one.

Thanks to Randy from Reliable Diesel for the info he gave me.

It is going to be real tight fit. You would think that Ford would have made the engine compartment a little longer, seeing as how Ford owns Cummins.

Anyhow when I bought the truck, I wished that it had come with factory air. Now I find that the turbo hits the A/C box hard and you could not possibly get a down pipe on it, no how, no way.

The A/C compressor had to be taken off to even get it between the frame rails. The mount will have to be altered or changed to a non A/C mount to get enough clearance. Then move the compressor up. Oh boy, another challenge!

I set the core support on and getting a fan and a radiator in is going to be tight. Right now it is looking like 1" tops. I may wind up altering the firewall for a little more clearance for the rear rocker cover.

Hopefully I can pick up a NV4500 next week so I can start building mounts. Found one through a third party that is supposed to be "new. " I am trying to get it in writing. Otherwise I buy one from Standard Transmission outright. The question there is when does my guarantee start?

I am still debating on whether to strip the butter yellow paint off of the body and repaint it "Arrest Me Red. " It would not be so bad except I drive a yellow fire truck. Shoot everybody knows fire trucks are supposed to be RED!

Tight Fit

Scot

For more clearance between the AC box and the turbo, just reverse the exhaust manifold (turn it end for end).

;)

Don't hesitate to use an electric fan. I have an 18" Permacool I got from Summit and it never comes on even driving up mountain roads in the Sieras. It will save alot of space. I took the fan hub off the engine so there was room to tuck the motor of the electric fan close to the block.

It ain't over yet

Scot,

I wouldn't celebrate too awefull hard just yet... the didactic portion of the training is the easiest. Putting that info to use on the street is what is tough for medics.

Congrats!

Steve.

BTW, we are replacing our lime green rigs with shiny red ones and detroit sereies 6's as needed. It's nice to go back to red but it is alot harder to keep clean.

Hey Scot. I flipped my exhaust manifold as CPFF mentioned, lots more clearance. It gave me plenty of room for my ac box. I put an electric fan in from FLEX-A-LITE and had enough clearance there too. I used the radiator from my Dodge donor and just made brakets to my core support for it. I am slowly but surely gettin my 78 built, Uncle Sam has been workin me to the bone lately. I want to work my way into a nv4500, for now I will have to settle for the ole Getrag.
