Have a very good friend, a top-notch mechanic, who has a Hummer H1 . . . not really. It looks like the real thing, but it's based on a 1978 Suburban 4 x 4 1500, powered by the god-awful 6. 2-liter GM diesel engine. For almost 4 years now he experienced problems with overheating and failing axle component (as the Hummber body is so heavy).
He now bought a wrecked 1992 Suburban 4x4, a 1-ton with 454 gas engine, a perfect rolling chassis, so to speak, which he plans to use and put his old Hummer body on top of it. He then wants to put a 1st. Generation Cummins with auto in it.
Question: since the transfer case on the 1991-and-up GM is on the driver's side, what year DODGE RAM donor will he need to buy?
I understand that the 1st. Generation RAMs (up to 1993) have the transfer case on the passenger side. That would create problems with the front driveshaft. At what year did the transfer case on RAMs move from the passenger side to the driver's side?
Thanks,
Bernard
