Hi all,

While this topic has been brought up before, I really need to ask for myself, so here goes.

My truck is a 2001 2500 QC, 24V CTD/auto, 4x4, LWB and I'd like to switch up to the manual because I'm at the point where, yeah the auto is nice/convenient and operates perfectly, but I really want to "drive" the truck instead of the auto doing the fun stuff. Also, I've doing a lot of HD truck driving lately and found that can't beat the sound and feel of reving up and manually shifting a turbo charged diesel. I know some would understand :D

Basically, I have a complete repair shop (lifts, scanners, air tools, welders, lathes, torches, etc. ) at my disposal and a best friend (he owns the aforementioned shop and tools), who is more than willing to take on the challenge. I just need to know the most important thing of all. How much will it cost (ball park)?

I know that when the swap is complete, I'll have to tow the truck to my local dealer and have the new computer (or swapped computer) reflashed, which should take care of any technicial/running and TSB upgrade issues, but is there anything else I should know before starting.

I know that some of you guys/gals would ask why I would want to do this, but the truth of the matter is that I love my truck and I don't feel like trading it in for a used truck or a new one for $40,000, just to get a 6 speed. A carbon-copy of my truck (SLT loaded with every single option but leather/heated seats) would be very hard to find.

Thanks for your input!

I was in the same boat as you come June of ’02. I pondered swapping trannys, but the cost was climbing into the 8k range. The tech that I was talking to told me that along with the new transmission and comp, you also need a new wiring harness, fuel pump, and a large variety of other goodies. Than and the VIN states 2500 auto. I don’t know, but the little trade out may knock your resale way down. And warranty.

I got kind of lucky in September. I traded a ’01 2500 ST auto, short bed 4x4 for an ’02 3500HO ST 6speed 4x4. When I bought the ’01 in Sept of ’01, I walked out the door at around $32k. When I traded in, I was right back to $32k, and my payments went down $100 a month. So the total I paid extra was around 6k (given that is about what I made in payments in one year).

Were I you, I would start pounding the newspaper ads and stealers. You may still find a ’02 with everything that you want that a stealer really wants to get out of inventory. That or hang on till fall of this year and try to upgrade to an ’03.

Hehe, I can help with this one (see sig). Mid December, we swapped a 6-speed and auto between 2 trucks. In your position, it would be best to find someone willing to make the trade, granted, that will be the hard part. That way, you have all the parts you need right there. We parked the trucks nose to nose, and did the swap in 34 hours (lots of working, no sleep).

Good Luck!

Call Enterprise Engine, they do the 6 speed swaps. It is hideously expensive or I would be rowing to work too. A trade is the only way it makes sense. There are some companies that will sell you a kit to do the swap yourself, but you are looking at $6K+ according to the checking I have done. Buying a wreck and parting it out is the only other alternative, but that could tie up a lot of money for a lot longer.
