Ok guys I have a question, this is especially for those of you with a rig like the wifes (in sig, what you see is what she has no bombs).

I have a HX-35 off a 95 12v. And I want to swap it out with her HY-35. Now in my looking things over today, I noticed a few things that are quite a bit different.

1. The wastegate set up is MUCH different. As those of you familiar with the 12v the wastegate has a vaccum line (assuming thats what it is) that runs from the pump OVER the head to the turbo. The HY has nothing of the sort infact the actuator has a rod connecting it to the outlet (to intercooler) of the compressor side.

Q. Will it hurt a stock engine w/ auto to not have a wastegate hooked up?

2. The ex. inlet (where it meets the manifold) on the 12v has TWO ports, where as the HY on our 24v has ONE monster port. I hope that made sense (did in my head).

Q. Will the HX off a 12v work on the 24v that had a HY on it?

Q. What are the two ports for? Why only one on the HY and and the manifold on the 24v?

Last question, will the stock 24v have enough fuel to run the HX? And if so am I wrong in assuming that it should have a little more kick with the HX instead of the HY?

TIA

Russell

I done the switch, and it is not really worth it. The HX35 I got to swap out my HY was off a 12v. The biggest problem I ran into was the oil line was different, and the way it matched up to the manifold was a little different also.

I thought I worked WAY to hard for the gain that I got. I would not go through the trouble again. Now that it is done, I would be hard pressed to go back however. The HY is a GREAT turbo untill you hit the 300-350hp marker. By going to the HX you WILL see a small amount of lag which I had NEVER seen with the HY.

Just a a heads up, trying to save you some time, with what I felt was a little reward. :)

Don't let me stop you though, if you have your heart set on it, then go for it, once it spools, it pulls better! :D

well out of curiousity and boredom we swapped em this morning and spun her around town for a little bit. I dont really feel any difference in lag time, but what I did notice was a LITTLE more top end for passing. But scared of any long time effects with out a little more research and advice of the "in the know" members on here (as I HATE this overvalved engine (NO OFFENSE to those of you who like them, it's just my personal opinion)). I guess my biggest concern is that I might screw something up with things being a little different between the two turbos' and her not having enough fuel right now. The only reason I am considering this is because she has the BOMB bug REALLY bad and I figure this HX is FREE and who can pass that up.

Russell,

Your right, there is a tad bit more on the top end, no doubt. :D

By chance is your truck a stick shift? That might be the reason for not seeing the lag. :)

More air is never a bad thing. More fuel and not enough air can be. Time to start with the other mods. Don't worry, if you really get nuts, the HX will be too small soon enough!

TxDieselKid,

No the truck is not a manual, it an auto, 47 R E/H whatever came with them from the factory. Her truck is COMPLETELY stock, and has never had anything done to it. What we are planning is a box, obviously, injectors, and beefing up the transmission. YES I KNOW GUAGES i figure that should go with out saying. The goal on her's is around 300 +/- a few.

well i put the HX in and have run it around 500 miles in the last two days. There has been a slight improvement but not a whole lot, but I figure this will save me from doing it later, since this one was FREE.

The only problem is that it triggers the overboost code (P 0234). I figure that is from not being able to hook up the wastetgate. There is no way (THAT I SEE) to hook up a wastegate from a 12v to the wastegate on a 24v. If some ones has done this same conversion and figured it out let me know.

Russell

If you want to hook up the waste gate hose you can drill and tap a fitting into the compressor housing above the intercooler hose connection. My PDR hx 40 is that way. A simple 1/8 npt brass elbow is all that is required. Tim
