Has anyone tried to convert an early Dana 80 DRW axle with drum brakes to disc brakes? I have a 1995 3500 2WD that I would like to put disc brakes on. EGR brakes web site says that they have a kit to do the conversion, but after calling them they are still waiting for a “final fit check” before they go into production. I wouldn’t mind waiting for EGR, but I have been waiting for over 6 months and they still are not going into production with the kit and they say it could be 2 months or 6 months, they don’t know. I have my doubts if they will ever come through with the kit. They are really vague on the phone.

The 2001. 5 through 2002 2nd Generation 1 tons came stock with rear disc brakes. I’m wondering if I can go to Dodge and get the parts to do the conversion. I went to the local Dodge dealer to see if I could buy the backing plate and caliper mount. But their pictures of the axle ends look different from 1995 to 2002. I haven’t been up close to a Dana 80 with disc brakes so I’m having a hard time figuring out if it is just a matter of bolting pieces on or if the axle ends are different.

Is there anyone out there who has done the conversion or has some information the axles?

Thanks for any help,

Archie Taylor

I've thought of doing this, and I think the answer is to find a whole axle in a junk yard. I haven't found one yet. I'd like to convert my '97 2500's Dana 70 with the DRW kit to a DRW Dana 80 with disks.

I think the complete axle swap may be the way to go.

The later trucks dont have a Dana, I dont know how/if this would effect a parts only swap.

If you had a Hollander interchange manual, it may be a great help.

Got Brakes?

Well,

EGR claims they have brakes, but not the conversion for my truck. It may be expensive but I called a Dodge junkyard today. They want $1750 for a DRW disc brake DANA 80 from a 2002 truck. That sounds outragous to me. You know that truck probably has 200K+ on the axle. I really want disc brakes, but this is crazy!

I thought that caliper was GM front wheel drive caliper off a Cadillac or something. I wouldn't want a car part on my TRUCK.

The Street Rod Manufacturing Company

Glen,

Thanks for the link to The Street Rod Manufacturing Company. I will call them today. What is funny is that the picture that EGR has online is exactly the same picture that Street Rod Manufacturing is showing. I wonder if that is why EGR can't manufacture the kits because of some copyright problems? Anyway thanks for the help.

Street Rod Manufacturing

I called Street Rod Manufacturing and spoke to Skip. He said they have a kit that was orginally made for someone running a Dana 80 in a rock crawler. He said it should be a bolt on deal. It is kind of pricey- $740 for the brackets and rotors, but no calipers or brake lines.

I have the axle out of my truck right now so this would be the perfect time for the conversion.

Thanks for the responses and ideas,

Archie
