I was wondering if these cool blue replacement halogen bulbs were benificial. Can you really see any better at night or are they just cool to look at?

Mike,

I have the Cool Blue halogens installed in my 98. 5. I really like them. They are not blue at all... Rather, they are a bright white, much like the PIAA Super Whites. The Cool Blues only cost about $25 a pair, and are well worth it. I noticed a difference when I changed over.

Where are the Blue Halogens available at? Any parts store? The stock lights really aren't too good. For me (being nearsighted) it seems like after a few hours of night driving my eyes are pretty strained. Something a little brighter may help. And please - no suggestions about getting stronger glasses #ad

K-Man,

They are available wherever Sylvania automotive lights are sold, so basically any part store. When you put them in, you may not notice the difference at first, but you will after a week or so of driving. I converted back over to the stock bulbs just for comparison, and was surprised how much of a difference the Cool Blues® made. CHeck them out at Cool Blues.

I think Tlippy is running half BOMBed in his RAM with one PIAA super White and one stock bulb. He could probably add to this thread about BOMBin your lights.

He also claims to be TOMMY TOO STOCK but he has modifications on his truck. Don't ya Tom?
How is that breather bottle mess doing for ya? I am taking mine off ASAP. It 'mists' the whole engine. Not a good thing.

cool blues aren't those annoying bright bluish headlights that all the kids have on their rice burners down here, are they? Those things are annoying as the dickens!

Jsimpson...

No, they are not anything close to the rice burner headlights. The ones they use are actually blue, and are not DOT approved for on-highway use. When you look at a Cool Blue bulb, the glass part is blue, but when it is turned on, it is not blue at all.

Neat; kind of like my Sylvania black lights? They have a black honeycomb behind the lens, but shine clear and bright when they are on. Got 'em from J. C. Whitney.

I would guess that anything added to the envelope of a halogen bulb can only decrease light output not enhance it.
Blue filters just reduce the amount of yellow and red light emitted. Yellow light is more useful than blue because (a) yellow scatters less in fog and (b) yellow is better focussed in the eye than blue.

What is needed are independent tests using accurate optical power measurement instruments.
The blue lights seen on Audi's etc are not halogen bulbs. They are metal halide arc discharge lamps. No filaments are used. They are up to four times more efficient than halogen, and more accurate.

Keep an eye out for a Dark Garnet & Driftwood 2WD Ram with HID Sport lights... I just "might" be driving it! Heh heh, yeah that's right... I got an HID kit on order. Oncoming traffic will need this #ad

Evan is going to be out about $300 for Sport headlamps plus about $2000 for HID, I suspect.
Will he use HID for high or low beams? You can't get both out of one unit.
Most cars seem to use them for low.

Ok guys here's the deal:

I will be buying the Sport lights (obviously). And yes, I will only be using HID for the low beams. Interestingly, most, if not all, of the high end cars use HID only fro low beams. The HID system I am buying is $825, and includes everything for doing the 9007 bulbs in the headlamps. The HIDs are 35 watts each, but produce much more light than a standard 55 watt halogen. Plus, they also produce less heat and last longer. They draw 20 amps at a startup voltage of 25,000 volts. After startup, the voltage drops to 78 volts, and current drops as well. Any more questions? #ad

We put PIAA's in the '99 gasser we have at work and they are much whiter and clearer. The high quality bulb makes a difference with how the light is projected through the lens. This is especially true in the Bosch H4 lenses in the '89. The sharpness of the pattern means less light scatter and is easier on the eyes. I notice with the '99 that the reflective distance is much greater than stock.

I hope that's a typo: 20A at 25,000V means the power is 500kW. (!)
I know that HID requires a 25kV startup voltage because I have experimented with them for a different application. But the 20A must be a different spec, perhaps at a different time during startup. They do take 50 to 100V during steady state operation. Some require AC drive, some DC.
The control circuit (electronic ballast) takes care of all the current/voltage requirements during startup, and steady-state.
$825 per pair is not bad.
BTW my Sport lamps use the 9007 only for high beam.

I put in some matrix blue bulbs but they're not blue at all, they are GREEN. A little brighter than stock and look kinda neat.
