When I was at the Brickyard 400 last year, I saw that cummins powered indycar in the infield museum. Way cool. If you're ever at the speedway, definitely check out the infield museum. It's only $3, and there's a LOT of really cool stuff in there!
The Cummins powered Indy car sat on the pole in 1952. It was running 3rd when it retired around lap 135. Cause of retirement was rubber sucked in to the intake plugged it up. The air intake was underneath the car. It vacuumed the worn tire rubber up.
in quallifying it was almost a second faster than the other cars.
The car was so heavy that it ate the right front tire during qualifying. During the race they were holding it back for tire life.
My book about Clessie Cummins states that they placed 12th in 1931 and 11th or 12th in 1951 at "Indy". Clessie installed the first Diesel in a tractor in USA and also the first Diesel in a motor vehicle.
