Desert water bags. They were everywhere back then. I guess antifreeze wasn't invented yet?
Coming up I-8 out of the desert there are signs advising motorists to shut off their A/C and there are water stations on the side for emergencies.
Never thought much of the Cajon Pass. Maybe dead of summer.
Thats because you have never towed the sucker with a 1951 Buick w/powerglide. Can you imagine the down hill speed in first with a two speed slush boxI bet he had a Kelsey-Hays brake controller....
Cool picture!
My grandfather had a Kelsey-Hays brake controller in his 1968 Dodge Monaco station wagon and 24' travel trailer with which he and grandma toured the US after he retired. I remember the brake controller being tapped directly to the brake master cylinder.
Yep, I had one. Took it off my FIL's Ford truck when we took over his 18' trailer. Worked great. Here is a picture of what was in my grandpa's car. I recall the lever would move when the brake pedal was depressed. There was a large diameter worm clamp to attach it to the bottom of the steering column.

I used to see these occasionally when I was traveling with my parents in the late Fifties and early Sixties. Usually as my father was inventing colorful new words as we slowly passed them on an upgrade.Wonder if hitch was of slimp wheel type. There’s shadow back there (and he’s sitting mighty level), so that’d be my guess if asked.
