I am due for my 60 month coolant change and will be adding a coolant filter at the same time. I have some parts on order from Fleetguard, A WF2133 Non-additive coolant filter, and 257715S filter base.

I have searched and found a few threads of people talking about them, and Gary's 2nd gen install. But no 3rd gen installs. .

So any pics? Thoughts?

Here is the Fleetguard Brochure

I am not sure if the Fleetguard filter has a built in restriction or not. But either way my plan is to take coolant from the plug between #5 & #6 and return it to the heater core return. I will use a shut-off valve and a check valve for easy/dry filter changes and to ensure the coolant goes the correct way :)

What I am not positive of is where the heater core return goes to? Does it go directly to the suction side of the water pump? What I don't want to do is end up bypassing the thermostat with the coolant filter and make my motor even slower to warm up. . Nor do I want to have the pressure from the filter line push the coolant backwards thru the heater core.

I also think that the flow coming from the back of the head will increase coolant flow around #'s 5&6 which are prone to run much hotter than 1-4. So its not quite like a Opie bypass, but for close to stock power and stock rpm's it should be good enough.

subscribing... seems like my heater return hose hits a hard pipe right behind the turbo, which runs along the block under the exhaust manifold to a port down by the lower radiator hose. 10-4 on the slow warm up; don't need to make that any worse! Post up results when you get it done...

Hose for coolant filter

Are you going to use SS braided hose for coolant filter hose? Just a little experience I had with SS hose. Use to have a truck with 1693 TTA engine was a mule of a motor. Any way I ran a hose ( SS Hose) for a 2ond Oil cooler) I went to the SS hose for heat protection. As it turned out that was a bad hose to use, an old time mech. told me after the 2one hose replacement that it was the stainless hose that was the problem. It to ran over the exhaust manifold like our coolant filter hose. It would bake the actual hose in the stainless steel shield and the hose would fail. The fix for me was to use the very best rubber hose and to use a heat shield sleeve. It lasted that way for many years after I installed the sleeve. This is just an experience I had if it helps great. Good luck with the install did mine 4 days ago. Dont know if it takes it any longer to get heat for heater Im sure its not as cold in SO CAL as it is in ID. The sleeve I used is from Welcome to Verocious Motorsports - A Provider of High Performance Automotive Exhaust Components

I have the same kit as Gary on my truck, installed the same way and so far it has not affected the warm up time or the heater at all. I run the Fleetguard WF2077 filter which has the restriction in it with no chemical additives. The line coming off the head I did run inside a larger hose for protection as BIGNASTY stated above.

Check that filter again, according to the Fleetguard site the WF2133 has the slow release additives in it.

I was thinking of adding a coolant filter as well. Only I was going to use a penray nf-2088 coolant filter. It is a need release filter that is now the industry standard for the heavy duty/industrial diesel world. It releases new additive as coolant ages and the ph changes, it wears its way through a wafer, thus releasing the next round of additives. There are several layers of additives, so you probably only need to change the coolant filter about every 2 years. While you would effectively make standard conventional antifreeze long life antifreeze.

Oops. . typo WF2123 is what I meant, and I actually ordered a WF2122, says no chemical additive right on it. Fleetguard is SUPER proud of that filter... Thou on an ISB it should last many many many years.

They sure are proud of that one. The WF2077 I use is only about $7.

Yeah I just had them order all the stuff I needed and didn't think to ask about a filter price. . The filter was more than the mount!!

Not sure yet, but I will probably return it for a WF2077
