coolant temp sender for gauge

my 2500 cummins has a build date of 12/97 it is a 12v..the temp sender is not in the back of the head.on driver's side, there is a plug there. so where is the sender located?

Is it behind the fuel filter?

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is located on the left side of the cylinder head behind the fuel filter and below the intake manifold.
