On my 92 4x4 club cab, automatic:

The coolant temerature showing on the stock quage onlygoes at most to just below the 1/4 mark at most. Sometimes it's even below that.

A friend who recently drove the truck said he is sure the normal position of the needle is about half-way and I should have the thermostat checked.

Any Advice?

I thought the same thing with my 92 when I first got it. Before winter I bought a new t-stat from Cummins and it made no significant difference. My 91 temp gauge reads around 1/2 but sweeps down to 1/4 as well.

When at normal operating temp, my gauge points at the line that is just to the left of the needle pointing straight down to the floorboards. It has run this way since it was new.

That's a normal reading. If you have a owners manual, take

a look at it. It shows a picture of the temperature gauge reading

as you described yours.

Yup... normal... . in fact one of the problems with this gen truck is they run a bit too cool.

Nascar Mark did some investigation and found that the actual temps (as per our guages) showed about 160-165*F. That is not hot enough for our trucks to burn fuel properly,... the one thing it "helps" with, is that it allows a bit more "wiggle room" if you work it hard and heat it up...
