I know that I should know this but I would like to know what coolant to use in my 1998. 5 24v. Can I purchase it from a parts store or do I have to get it from the dealer. Also what is the temp for the thermostat.

Buy it anywhere as long as it meets specifications for the Cummins.

The t-stat is 195* but I installed a 180* and it works better for hot weather and towing in mountains. I also contend the 180* is less susceptible to making the head gasket leak under the t-stat.

Godspeed,
Trent

Most name brand coolants (green) will be fine. The oem t/stat on the 98. 5 is 180,the higher temps came later.

I use the blue stuff (Fleetguard ES Compleat EG pre-mix). Got it from my freindly neighborhood Cummins dealer. I'm a fan of the low or no-silica content stuff (Compleat is low-silica). Silica (yep, the stuff in sand) is used to keep cooling system components clean, but it will eventually turn into a gel and start to plug stuff up.
