Have 97 3/4 with a TST power kit, automatic transmission and 410 gears. Once last August temp got to almost red line while pulling 5th wheel. Wind but flat, no hills. Was wondering if Horton system worth the money and would keep from happening again.

Daffit,

Check out Using Electric Fans There are also several other discussions about the benefits of the Horton fan versus the cost. I love the benefits, but not enough to buy another when this one dies. I'll go to electric next. I also installed a custom radiator. My fan seldom kicks on at highway speeds unless I'm pulling through the mountains. I had first installed an aux transmission cooler with it's own fan, but that didn't stop the transmission from overheating under a heavy pull through the mountains. I think the best thing I did was replace the radiator. It's from Griffin Thermal and is about an inch wider than the one that Dodge uses. My 5ver weighs 13. 5K.

Banche, how much that radiator cost? Does it have extra rows in the core, more fins? Are the end tanks plastic?

Hows your Thermostat?. If its the OE one pull it and test it in a pan of boiling water on the stove. Its rare to get a 12 valve too hot. Most of us have overcooling problems.

I also would check, the radiator cap. Test it to make sure it seals good. Check coolant level and radiator for corrosion & deposits. Check your Clutch on your fan. If it freewheels easy or has front to back play (bearing shot) when the truck is off, it could be worn out.

Make sure you are getting good flow through the radiator.

I agree with Bill, our cooling systems are more than adequate when functioning correctly. Could your radiator be clogged with bugs? With my 3500 pulling a 28k load on a 90° day the fan only comes on with the steepest hills.

Thanks for the info, I replaced my thermostat shortly after this happened but haven't pulled in the heat since. Think I will have the radiator flushed and replace the hoses, cap and look at fan cluth before this season of fun. Again thanks everyone for the info.
