Does anyone have experience with the Cooper Discoverer ST as a snow tire. I am thinking of using my wearing bfg at's three season and getting a set of cooper 255/85r16 for the winter.

An opinions or other suggestions?

Thanks

Ted

I had a set briefly, but I traded them for BFG AT's. They looked great and were probably a great tire, but I took a hit in the mpg department. When I went to the BFG's, I seemed to regain some of my lost mpg. The tire before the Cooper was the factory set, less aggressive and not as tall, so the drop was noticable, on the order of 5 to 10%. (Yes, all calculations accounted for the size difference. )

Ted, the cooper ST is an awesome tire. a couple years ago I put 255-85-16's on a 4wd, they look as good as the work. They are a little taller than stock so they won't hurt your mileage. It's hard to find a tire that does good in all conditions, but they do. From snow to wet roads and even mud, their great. I just put six on my 2wd 3500 about two weeks ago with a detroit locker install. For that i used 235-85-16's on the back and 265-75-16's on the front. The ONLY bad thing I found with these tires is that they like to hold stones...

Ted...

I have a set on mine and absolutely love them. They are in the stock size-265/75R16 and have been on my truck now for about 10,000 miles. With the little amount of snow I have seen here in central Pa I can say they will go thru anything. I know up where you are the snow can get out of hands at times, but, with the way they clean themselves out you will have no problems.

If you'd like to drive a set on a truck Ted I'd be glad to meet you at the halfway point on any Saturday or Sunday. Midway between us would be up near Painted Post,NY(jct of US 15 & US 17). Let me know if I can help... ... ... Andy

P. S. =I'll drop a phone number for you to reach me if you have any querstions about these tires that I can answer.

I think some of the Coopers are highly underated. I had a set of the Discoverer AT's on my last truck and they were better in every way than the BFG AT's the truck was wearing before. They had better snow traction, better traction around the boat launch, were quieter, rode smoother, wore more evenly and lasted longer on the same truck with the same usage. If they had the size I wanted in a 17" I would be on top of em.

Awesome tires. I have had them before and intend to get another set for this winter. They totally outperform the hakkapawhatever's that everyone here in the snow belt seems to get so wet over, IMO. Check out the all season Weathermaster MS tires. They are the only all season I know of that carries the snowflake symbol for severe snow use.

The Discoverer ST doesn't look too bad.

it's the Discoverer M+S has the absolutely awesome snow and ice capability. It has the soft snow compound you need, 5 gazillion sipes and a BIG footprint. You can stud them, as well.

I also used the Cooper Weathermaster XGR on my car a few winters, been through 2 full sets of them. Incredible traction in snow and ice, and the price can't be beat if you buy them in the right place.

Thanks a lot for the input guys.

I think I am going to go with the STs as soon as I can track down a set of factory chrome steel wheels 6. 5 inch wide as I want them on a separate set of wheels.

Anyone got a set of wheel laying around??

Jim do you think they would do as well with out the studs. I am in and out of canada on a regular basis and studs are a no-no.

PW I like the looks of the MS but need to keep a taller tire with my 4. 10s than they are offered in.

Hammer, thanks for the offer, I PMed you.

Thanks for the input

Ted

I was also thinking of siping them but I can believe it, there is no one around here that sipes tires:rolleyes:

ted

i'm sure they would be fine without studs. i just like the studs for the ice, nd these are winter only for me so i went with studs.
