Guys:
I have 138,000 miles on my rig. . {1993} and do kind of alot of short miles to and from work. . i was thinking about going to Amsoil. What viscosity is best, because at the moment i'm using 15w-40 DELO 400?-And are the Amsoil filters better or the same as the Fleetguards? lemme know! thanks!

I've got 123,000 miles on my '93 and have used Amsoil Marine 15W40 for the past 105,000 miles without any problems. Oil analysis done at each oil change have shown the virtually same results on the last one as with the first. As far as filters I have always tried to find the best and I aam currently using Fleetguard synthetic media oil filters. Hope this helps.

Bob,

How many miles between changes do you typically go?

I have used amsoil's 15w40 marine synthetic also for 7 years also their full flow and bypass filters. I change the oil and both filters every 6 thousand miles. The oil analysis looks the same from the first one.

Wow, sounds good, thanks... well, what about full synthetic oil? or different weights?

My oil change interval is every 6000 miles. Amsiol Marine 15W40 is a full synthetic but they do have a blended 15W40 that you can buy. As far as different weights check your owners manual to see when the use of different weights is recomended. If you don't have a manual let me know - I can get you the info out of mine.

RamBill, Nix on the Wix!!! I've seen them come apart from the inside more than once. I saw a ford die from one. My company stopped recieving wix and started to use Donaldson instead unless a brand is preferred (like Fletguard). I hear Fram is also bad for our application. I use either Mopar or Fleetguard (same thing). I have started to use Delo 400 and I get no stink like I did when I used Rotella or Prem. Blue.

Cummnzpowr, I used Delo until I took an extended trip from Cal. to Denver and Back towing a 10,000 5th wheel trailer. During that trip I used 1 1/2 quarts of oil.
Switched to Amsoil 3000 Diesel Oil and Amsoil filter made same trip and the oil level never left the full mark. I have since made numerous trips towing same trailer and I never add oil between 6000 mile changes.
My truck only has 86,000 on it.

Just my 2 cents, Walt.

The most I've ever heard of out of a Cummins on Amsoil is 695,000 miles. I put 256,000 on a Honda accord with Amsoil and my bearings looked like new when I inspected them before I sold it.

Amsoil 15w-40 is a great choice for your year/mileage.
Yes, the Amsoil filters are the best on the market. If I wasn't using Amsoil filters, I would be using Fleetgaurd. I don't think the others come close to these two.

How much is the Amsoil? It looks like a good product, but may be hard to get where I am at.
Currently I pay about $2. 47Cdn a litre/Quart for semi synthetic Esso XD3 0W-40 and about 1$1. 55/l for XD3 15W-40.

I run Kendall 15-40 in mine. I run alot of short miles and I change every 5000 miles. I have never run an analysis but the oil still smells like oil, and not diesel. just my 2 cents.
