2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Correct Way to Hook Up Trailer Brakes

When I bought my truck I was having an issue with the truck blowing fuses. The turn signals, flashers, and brake lights would not work. The fuses were replaced and while driving the voltmeter would peg at 18 (the max) for a while then return to normal. Brought the rig to the Dodge company and they said the trailer brake connector was shorting out and causing the problem. My friend said that the brake box should be run straight off the battery and not the fuse panel. Has anyone else ahd this problem? How have ya'll hooked up your brake box? Should I run hot and ground wires straight to th ebattery or some other way? The one in the truck is a Tekonsha (sp?). Any advice?

Under the dash there is a brake controller connection (white, rectangle near the steering colum), being that you didn't buy the truck new, I suppose you don't have the adapter that came with the truck? See if you can get one from the dealer, then just wire your controller to the pig-tail on the adapter, and plug in to the port under the dash.

The pigtail adapter that Rob mentioned is a stock item at most U-Haul rental places. They charge $6. 00 or so for it.



My plugin (2001) on the truck is blue and attached to the white box at the steering column under the dash.

Trailer Plug

I got mine at my local RV shop. It cost $12 & they make em for Ford, Dodge, Chev... ... Four pin & 4 wire connection. Just wire the four wires from this new junction box adapter straight into your controller (4 wires) & your trailering plug wiring is hooked up & working. Good luck!

be sure to read the instructions....

sometimes the wires don't hook up color for color.
