Cost of FORD engine parts

I'm currently working on a FORD gasser engine and can't believe how inexpensive these parts are. I had to pull the heads for a gasket leak cuz the lady overheated the engine by running with a bad fan.



Perhaps they are not cheap, but when compared to the cost of CUMMINS parts they are much less. WOW



I found this to be true with JOHN DEERE parts which I buy in earnest to keep my junk running and had to wrench on a neighbors FORD farm tractor... ...



..... may I couldn't believe how cheap them parts cost. WOW!



Why is the stuff I own so dam costly????? :{

#1 It's popular and they have you by the short hairs.

#2 It's a diesel



I found out about #1 when the seal went out in my vacuum pump on my '93 D-250 and was told that it wasn't rebuildable and it was $800 from the dealer and $400 from a junk yard! I then took it apart and did some measuring on the seal and then went to Checker Auto with a dial caliper and Snapon 13/16 socket in hand (close enough to the shaft size). I spent a little bit of time behind the counter measuring seals and found a couple that might work. I ended up with 3 possible matches and went with it. Total cost was less than $35 and I still have that pump as a spare for my '92.



I found out about #2 when I was getting an alternator for my 6. 5 Chebby several years ago and had the parts guy grab one for a 454 gasser for $h!tS & giggles and I found that they were the exact same after you split it apart and rotate it 1/3 of a turn and put it back together



The price was about $90 more for the "diesel" just because they could.



Edit: Forgot to tell you about the price that I was quoted for an AC compressor for a Geo Metro... $1300!!

Yes all John Deere parts are gold plated. I owned one once. :-laf

same with Peterbilt parts... they really stick it to you at that parts house. .

So if peterbuilt used the same engine as another truck, they still charge more on parts or whatever's under the pete name?

Higher pricing should only be on "Proprietary Parts", in otherwords parts exclusive to Peterbilt trucks. Cab parts, exhaust parts, etc.



Most engine parts are available at other OEM's so pricing on those shared parts is far more competitive as a rule.



Cummins and Cat parts and repair are wide open to all dealers for the time being as long as service tools/training and parts stocking requirements are met.



For example, Daimler owns Detroit Diesel and has made the DD13, DD15 and DD16engines only available in Freightliner and Western Star trucks. Some buses that Daimler has an interest in use it as well including Setra.



But competion still keeps part prices down as Freightliner, Western Star, Sterling and Detroit Diesel Distributors still have open access to all of those engine parts and compete with each other for the business.



It's the American way... ...
