I am thinking on putting a sliding rear window in my truck, any idea how much it will cost and can i do it myself. I have a solid glass right now. need some idea of cost versus benefit too. and where to find a sliding glass.
When I bought my new 01. 5 it had the solid glass and I wanted a slider. I checked with several places and they wanted $800 on up to do the job!!! I found a nice slider, but I do not remember the brand, for $400 cash and carry.
The original glass is glued in. A friend helped me who installs the sliders for a living. He had all the tools to do the job. I would not recommend that you try it yourself unless you have experience and tools... or a good friend who can help you like I did.
In the QC, the slider is worthless IMO. Too much of a PITA to open and close from the front reaching across the back seat. Think the only times I've had it open was to stick long things through it (like 10' pipe sections and the like). Plus where will you put all your stickers? And they'll get covered up when the slider is open.
I wanted my slider for one reason. I haul people in the bed often down here in Mexico and it is nice to be able to communicate with them while driving. If I have people in the bed, there is always some one in the back seat to open the sliders in the truck and topper for me. With a topper, I do not see security as much of an issue. It could be without a topper.
NPS brings up a good point about an electric slider. If regular ones are costing 400-800, jeesh that seems expensive. I would check into an electric. CR Laurence makes one for our trucks. I saw one in a local glass shop and it was 500ish.
I got in on the group buy that someone on the TDR set up for the CR Laurence electric rear slider a few years ago and still works great. I use it all the time. I would have a good glass place do the window install. I had to go to 3 shops before I found a place that did it for a fair price. I wired it myself but had them install the glass. Installation took all of 30-40 minutes. (glass installation part) No security issues. You can't even tell it's electric unless you see it in operation.
I have been a missionary down here for 18 years. I often haul church groups. I have hauled up to 20 people with luggage on a 36 hour trip! I have hauled up to 30 without luggage going to a youth meeting "only" 3 hours away!!!
I love it down here, but I was born an American and I will die an American! The US may not be perfect, but I love it too!!!
I got in on the power slider group purchase too ... got to be one of the best non-engine BOMBs. re: sliding window security, I had a slider in there. You can fix the security thing if you cut some plastic strips & put them in the slots the windows slide in. I cut 2 pieces so that the window wouldn't open but 1" or so. They were about 1/16" thick.
Every once in awhile I'd notice one laying on the back seat after the wife drove the truck. Come to find out, the cause was going too fast over speed bumps. :--) :-laf
