I didn't know where Cotulla was until I looked it up. You moving there or just visiting? Biggest problem that I can see is that it is right in the middle of nowhere. Might be OK if you want to cruise into Mexico now and then. Looks to be about an hour away. Not far from Laredo. PM MCummings. He lives in Laredo and can probably fill you in a little more.
Cotulla area isn't all that bad, coming from up North you will find the summer heat "interesting". Be sure to set aside a Dr. Pepper so you can drink a toast to the guy who invented air-conditioning every July 4th
Spanish will indeed be all around you, all the time, but most everybody still speaks English (or at least Spanglish) down south there... . for today, anyways.
I know about the heat being "interesting" Last Year I went to the George Strait Team Roping Classic in San Antonio last march. It was in the teens up here and 70s and humid as hell down there. Speaking of which, ain't George supposed to live in the area?
I've been through cotulla a million times, but I can't really remember much about it. either a testament to how unremarkable cotulla is, or how forgetful I am. No need to learn spanish unless you want to. The heat isn't that bad. At least it doesn't take long to get used to it. Yes, George Strait has a ranch in the cotulla area. He was actually born in my hometown of Poteet Tx, but I don't think he claims it.
Went thru Cotulla on Tuesday on my way to Corrizo Springs. The Dairy Queen is good. Diesel is exspensive. It is 90% mexican. Your only a little over an hour away from Boys Town.
George's ranch is north of the intersection of Hwy 44 on SH 83. Wasn't George born in Pearsall? I beleive he currently lives in the Dominion Subdivision outside of San Antonio.
George Strait does live just outside San Antonio. I believe he claims Pearsall as his hometown. He doesn't tour that much anymore (at least nothing like he used to) and likes to spend time with his wife and his son "Bubba" on his ranch and doing team-roping events.
I think the two Georges (Strait and Jones), along with Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Alan Jackson are the best country singers ever. I like Toby Keith too, he's 100% American. Can't stand the Dixie Chicks , I switch radio channels if they come on.
Anyway..... if you go to Cotulla take lots of reading material and make sure you have satellite TV and radio. Good luck if you have to go there. Any place can grow on you if you give it a chance :-laf .
I live about an hour north of Cotulla, almost in san antonio BTW>. . but pretty much everything they said is true. Yes, Spanish would help if you knew how to understand it at least. Otherwise, it's more of a base camp for alot of hunters who have ranches or Deer Lease's out there to get supplies and such. It's about the halfway point between San Antonio and Laredo, and yes diesel is more expensive there. When you get there, PM me i'd be glad help you. As far as George Straight goes, not sure exactly what town he was born in over here, but i do know he does own a big house in the Dominions up on the northwest corner of San Antonio. . and i've seen him a few Spurs games, pretty nice guy to talk to. . his wife on the other hand :-laf
Just another note. Dont bother learning Spanish. I will do you little good. You need to learn Tex-Mex. Its a whole nother language. My wife has had 2 years of college spanish. aint done her a bit of good. Make ya some good mexican friends whose wives make homemade hot tamales, tortillas, menudo, and fajitas ranchera, and youll do just fine.
They have a deer contest there every fall, Los Cazadores. On FM624 coming out of town, there is a sign that says no fuel for 80 something miles. The Frio River is just a short hop away. When it warms up in the spring, take a drive up there through Uvalde and spend the day cooling off in the river.
Ummm, JNelson, which Boys Town are you referring too?? The one for wayward boys in the Texas Panhandle or the one for wayward old farts in Mexico???
I thnk George also owns a real nice home in Rockport too. Down in a fancy gated subdivision on the water. He used to put on a big team ropin and concert in Kingsville but it got too big so he moved it over to San Antonio.
I was refering to "the" Boys Town down by Nuevo Laredo.
Yes - George does have a house in rockport. I friend of mine put the Corian in for his counter tops. I made his roping in Kingsville for 4 years strait. (sorry I couldn't help it)
