So I am sitting in line at the McDonald's drive through, in neutral and clutch out, and my truck revs up another 100 to 150 rpm, then drops off. Does it several more times and the increase is between 50 and 200 RPM each time. There is a Ford Exploder sitting in front of me, and I am maybe 2 feet off the bumper. I get to work and let the truck Idle for a couple of minutes and it was nice, smooth and flat at 750.

On the way home from work the day before, I thought that it was surging but I just chocked it up to the road being rough, and I had been driving a '98 Dodge 1500 van all day. Once I got home, no problems last night, or tonight, nor did it do it on the way.

The only thing that I can think of (that is not truck related) is that either the Ford was running way rich, Micky D's had a gas leak, or the local power plant down the road had some funky emissions and my truck was burring it off as it went through the intake. I am hoping real hard that it was just the Ford. All I do know is that every time the Revs went up, so did my heart rate. No codes showed up in the PCU and the ECU.

Please note that the Edge EZ in the signature below was off and has been all week (the can bus connection was effectively disconnected) and the W/I has not been run for over a week.

Any ideas anyone? I have read several threads about surging, but I could not for the life of me remember why it was happening to them, and I have read just enough of the Ford 6. 0 threads about oil in the intercooler and runaways to make me pull the Turbo to intercooler plumbing tomorrow and look for oil from the turbo just in case it decided to eat itself recently. My AFE has not left even a smudge of residue on the blades or the intake hose. I have noticed an black film around the inside edge of the turbo but when I had my intake hat off a couple of weeks ago, it was super clean, as was the pipe going up to it.

surging

sounds familiar... ..... mine is most noticable when i leave in the morn-truck is plugged in all night but trans still cold-bout 1800 rpm at 40 -2 miles to school ------might do it once in a while in thhe first couple minutes seems to go away when warm--i just changed transmission fluid  i cant say for sure if i was doin it befor that or not:( this makes me a bit nervous:(

dont know if related but i am lookin under truck today all the road salt makes everthing white... . seems i did not get the hose from the lp to the filter back on all the way when i did the bjs i thought it was leaking out the bottom of the lp -its a little cool to do it tonight:--) :--)

Maybe it was stray RF from the mickey D wireless system.

That's a new one.

Can wireless units cause interference with our ECM's?

I would expect that to be more prevalent around emergency equipment (police, fire, ambulance) than the local artery clogger outlet.

I knew the Auto's were having trouble with electrical interference and shifting, but Idle fluctuations?

Diesels can be affected by fumes. I was driving my 93 one day and got stopped by a flagman at a paving project. The fumes from the asphalt caused the idle on my truck to jump up by 500 rpm's. Once I was out of the area, it was back to normal and never did it again. I have to assume it was the fumes.

While loading my tanker truck at the pipeline we are not aloud to let our trucks idle or park next to a loading rack while truck is running. The fumes from the loading rack will cause the motor to rev up. Just my 91% octaine worth.
