I had the rear end rebuilt at 2200 miles. Your ring, pinion, crush sleeve, bearings, job... ( Like many of us on here). Now after 2000 miles of more driving the rear of the truck whines at 65-70 MPH. If under 65, perfect, if over 70, perfect. No whine on deceleration at any speed. Is it possible that it just need to be adjusted??? Not the whole rear axle replaced???? I was thinking of taking it to a specialist for this service and paying to have it done if it would help... trying to stay away from the dealer, they haven't been much help. . thanks!Oo. Oo. Oo.

I've been thinking the same thing. Mine is fine so far, but if'n I was to have trouble, I'd seriously think about just taking it to a rearend specialist and have them look at it. Probably would just need the ring and pinion set up properly.

It takes a pretty talented rearend man to properly analyze and adjust ring/pinion teeth mesh patterns - and "good men" seem increasingly hard to find...

Good luck...

If you can find a good one, I'd give it a go. Doing rear gears is more than merely looking at a repair manual and having a bunch of air tools at your disposal. You should be looking for a differential artisan, rather than a differential mechanic.

I'd minimize the driving with it til you do; to keep any unnecessary wear to a minimum.

I never saw the parts when they came off, so couldn't tell ya how they looked. I do know that the fluid was real dark. I had them ck the fluid this week and they said it looks good, just a little grey, which they said is normal for the break in of a new gear set ( I guess tthey wear the paint coating off)... I'll maybe call around to some specialists and see what I can come up with...

My diff is quiet. If the gears aren't scuffed, proper pinion depth and backlash should result in quiet operation. Tight backlash makes the gears run hot.

I actually think the gears might be breaking in... . seems they were much more quieter this morning on the way to work. I never hear a peep from 0-65... . and this morning I creeped it up to 68 before I heard the slightest whine. . then once I hit 71. . gone again and quiet... . have 1,000 more miles before next oil change... we;ll see how it goes. .

Well, the rear end whine was so faint this morning on the way to work it must be " Breaking In" It seems to be getting better and better the more I drive it!
