I purchased a new 2009 RAM 2500 CTD quad cab with the 68rfe in September to replace my 2003 CTD. Let me say that Dodge really got it right on this one! I have been nothing but impressed with this rig from day one.

I have a couple of questions:

First, I am noticing an issue with extensive brake dust build-up on the passenger front wheel after an extended highway trip. There is a marked difference in dust buildup on the passenger side vs. the driver side. I am going in Friday for an oil change and will this looked at, but wondered if anyone else had this issue.

Second, I wanted to know if the 68rfe circulates fluid in Park. My ’03 48re needed to be set in neutral to allow fluid circulation. Any guidance appreciated. Thanks

I noticed alot of brake dust at first on my truck, but after 10k the dust seemed to disappear. Didn't put on new front pads until 145k, and back pads @ 190k. I use the exhaust brake as much as the gas pedal, it's the only way to go. I don't know about the transmission, but I change both filters every 75k and use Amsoil syn. Haven't had any trouble yet and I'm looking at 300k pretty close.....

I would post this question to the Cummins/Dodge engineer. Steve has set up a date I believe in Dec to discuss these type of questions. Do a search and look for the thread.

Good question to ask.

I had the same issue with the right front brake leaving brake dust where there wasn't an issue with any others. That has seemed to go away after about 15,000 miles. I was concerned myself but it went away before I could take it in to be looked at.

I do not know for sure about the trans pump. Some of the tech's on here might chime in and answer this for us.

there was a thread over on cumminsforum.com about draining the transmission for transmission oil change, and in that, it was noted that the 68RFE doesn't pump in park, but you have to switch to neutral.

the instructions included start engine, put in neutral to drain the transmission (with pan removed, and line extended into a 5 gallon bucket).

this is an interesting thing to think about - when you want to cool the transmission one needs to put the parking brake on and use neutral.

explains why my transmission temp doesn't go down if i leave it idling for 5 mins to cool down in park.

can't find the thread at this second.

Thanks for the help. I inspected the right front brake and can find nothing wrong. It does not heat up or appear to be dragging, nor are there any unusual noises. But after about 500 miles, the wheel actually has an orange cast to it while the other three are virtually clean. I'll see what the tech says.

Again, thanks for the replies
