What are the min and max tolerances for valve lash on our engines? Just curious after my adjustment this weekend.

What is the torque for the oveflow valve, I am replacing mine tonite and wanted to double check? Also, can you re-use the same sealing washers or should I wait and get some new ones?

Thanks guys,

Joe

Spec is . 10 intake . 20 exhaust. The intake tends to get real tight over time while the exhaust lash gets bigger. Tolerance is probably +/- 0. 05.

I'd love to know about the overflow valve too. I think mine needs to be checked and maybe replaced.

Thanks Awray!

I knew what the specs are, just was curious about the +/- tolerances and . 005" seems about right. :D

Anyone on the overflow valve torque and if it is a good idea to re-use the original sealing washers if one doesn't have any new ones to replace them with?

Thanks, Joe

I looked thru my Chilton manual about the valves and the only thing I could find was to adjust them every 36,000 miles. I've seen the ex. valves way outta wack on one truck. They were around . 6-. 7. Intake valves on the same truck were around . 3-. 4

Yeah you should use new sealing washers. Their cheap insurance.

I've never heard a torque value for the overflow valve. Just tightened mine down till it was good and tight and it didn't leak so I didn't worry about torqueing it down.

On the overflow valve - torque it till it doesn't leak! ;) I don't have the torque spec at hand, but realistically, I just snug it good until it doesn't leak. If you get it so tight you're nervous and it still leaks, replace the two sealing washers. The only place I know that has the rubber coated ones is a Bosch shop. But you can substitute copper ones. In this case, try oil pan drain bolt washers from about any decent auto parts store. I've used them on the supply side banjo bolt on the other side of the pump and they work fine.
