Archived Coverter Woes

:{We did a really dumb thing and now our torque converter is slipping. We did find a place here in Payson, UT that will sell us a new one. Our problem is trying to find a shop in Payson, Orem, Provo or Salt Lake City that can do an R & R on the transmission to get us back on our way. Fortunately we are still "driveable" but pulling a big 5th wheel, we don't want to venture out from where we are today [we don't live in Utah, let alone Payson]. We tried the TDR companion hoping we could find a member with a big enough garage and/or the right transmission jack or something similar because if we could, Dutch could do the job himself but we struck out. Any help out there??

Any trans shop should be able to do a converter R+R . Hope you bought a decent one.

Converter woes

Yep, we do know that any transmission shop should be able to do a converter R+R and yes, we did buy a decent one but our hope was to find someone in this area to either recommend a good shop or better yet, have a garage where we could to the R & R ourselves. That sure would save a bundle.

Ok ok, here's what we did We decided to tackle a 13% uphill grade for 12 miles. Yea, you don't have to tell us, IT WAS STUPID! Unfortunately there was no place to turn around so we were commited. orwe should have been. The last switchback got us. 1/4 mile from the top we blew the radiator. We were fortunate that a front loade happened by was able to tow us to a safe area where we boondocked [up on broke down mountain]for 2 days while a radiator was shipped in. Dutch had to install the new radiator outside in 24 degree weather in the snow. The roads cleared and we drove down the mountain-NOT via the same road. We noticed some slipping which is where the converter comes in. We have an appointment on Friday and hopefully that will be the end of this saga. The worst part of the whole ordeal was that we never got to do the sightseeing we had planned on so we'll have to go back someday. You would think that after 12 years of being on the road fulltime, we would know better! Ok now you can laugh----------Diana

This is exactly why manual transmissions are best for pulling.

Sucks yall blew your trip having to pull a transmission! So, when it "blew" the radiator, was it the transmission cooler radiator or the engine radiator?

Covnerter Woes

Having me drive a stick shift [we share the driving] is not a pretty sight so we'll stay with what we have. It was the engine radiator. We had thought til we opened the hood, it was just a hose but no such luck.

Thanks for the "we're not laughing" quote but I have to be very honest. If I had read our post and it was by someone else [after a moment of feeling sorry for them] I would have said: Dumb ***. Oo. Diana

Folks, I'm a flatlander, so don't be too hard on me for asking this: Would a 4X4 with a lockout hub kit be able to do this in low?
