Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting New toy

I have a concern with coyotes.

Last night we cooked out and could watch the coyotes in the brush watching us. They tried to coax my 20 month lab out but she is pretty smart and very well disciplined. I have told her they are bad dogs and will hurt her. She will walk towards them but stops and stays in the opening. Alway comes when commanded to.

I live on the fringes of town and cannot shoot them legally. ( although a cop has said to do it and call him. One neighbor ( a guy of all things) calls them if he thinks he hears a gun.

Give me advice on getting rid of them or keeping them at bay.

Last night the sat on each side of my property and sang or cried like injured dogs. My lab sat at my side watching and listening.

I lost a young lab to the "come play with us" calls from coyotes. I would seriously be thinking about at the very least a high power pellet rifle. Coyotes are smart and a well placed pellet a few times might make them think twice about hanging around your house.

I'm more prone to use my . 243!!! With 55 gn loaded. But it doesn't sound like a fire cracker!!!

Who knows a good mix of something as, well,,,,,,,,,, poison?

Not really wanting to hurt the deer or squirrels etc. Just the preditors who are brave enough to come in my yard.

These coyotes were with-in 50 FEET of us at times. The girls were riding ATV's and signalled to me they saw them. They were with-in 15 feet!!!

buy some firecrackers. shoot the coyote and when your neighbor calls the cops say the noise was just some neighborhood kids who threw a firecracker out a car window show the cop the exploded fire cracker(s) where the "kids" threw them :-laf

I am of course, just kidding and would never recomend or suggest someone break the law in any form or sort. will your local animal control handle nuisance / dangerous animals?

Fox, I understand your concern, but remember the coyotes are there for a reason, now don't take me for a bleeding heart liberal animal rights wacko:-laf

You have the right to protect your belongings and family. First call your State Fish and Game department and talk to them about your problem. They may come out and trap the coyotes for removal. The coyotes, if hungry enough will bait your family dog into coming out to them, then I'm afraid the dog will be coyote food. Before our Rotty passed on we kept a very close eye on him, because a pack of coyotes will in fact defeat and eat a Rotty.

If the coyotes are on your property and threatening your family, by all means shoot, screw the neighbor. ;) But I really don’t think that would be necessary, (shooting the coyote).

Here in the desert we have coyotes just outside the fence everyday, during daylight hours they will not come in the yard because they know I’ll shoot AT them. I intentionally miss of course, but they don’t know that.

Coyotes and People

The link is for desert coyotes but I'm sure some of the ideas will work for you also.

Good luck.

I'm just kidding to about shooting them. But I will show the pictures when I do!!!!!!!!!

It is open season on them.

As I see it I can wait until they get close and beat them to death, or protect myself and family and shoot them at a safe distance! 50-100 feet is too close.

Last week I was mowing and noticed my lab looking into a field of corn. I stopped and shut it off. A coyote was crying like an injured animal moving across the field. I threw a rock in and it all quit!!!!

Anti freeze?

Sevin?

What else?

How about rubber bullets out of a handgun? I would think those would sting enough to "train" them.

And a . 410 shotgun is pretty quiet.

Go to the ammo store and get sub-sonic . 22 cal. The report has a little more 'crack' than a pellet rifle. I suspect a well placed shot will kill a dog outright, so practice first and watch where you aim. I respect my neighbor's peace and quiet and use this round to keep invading rodents at bay.

Ditto Kowaliga on the sub-sonic . 22 ammo. Always handy to have around. 22 CBs will also do if you can find them but you need to be close range.

How bout rat shot in a . 22 least thats what dad calls it. The shells have a blue plastic tip and are filled with hundreds of little balls. At long distances they hurt more than they damage, might run them off. I really don't like killing anything if I don't have to and as said above they are there for a reason and they do have a purpose.

I would guess that local ordinances would prohibit any kind of shooting. Poison would get you in trouble with a number of different agencies plus there is the potential of un-intended victims. The air gun idea is a good thought but I don't know, in my town there is an ordinance against air guns as well. I have a very similar location (sounds like). I live in city limits but I border the country and prime coyote habitat. I have a paintball gun. I don't see them around too often ANYMORE. Coyote seen sporting new "punk" hairstyle.

I like the idea of sub-sonic 22's.

i was thinking a little bit ago. The ex- many years ago had some Timic. She used it on some stray cats getting in the garbage barrel. She put about 1/8 tea spoon in some hamberger, threw it in the barrel. Next morning 3/4 of the hamberger was still ther, but we had 3 dead cats with-in 7 feet of the barrel!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway that timic is all gone. ( glad she didn't use it on me)!!!!

poison is wrong. Just keeping the coyotes away is what I really want.

Golden Malrin fly bait in Classic Coke. Apparently racoons get as far as five feet away after lapping some up; I'd expect coyotes would fare similarly. Supposedly cats won't touch it (though they might if you used tuna water/oil instead of Coke). Dunno about dogs, though. They seem to eat and drink just about anything. And sometimes everything.

Available online at around $8/lb. or $30/5 lb.

My aunt in Sioux Falls, God rest her soul, shot rabbits in her vegetable garden for many, many years with her . 22 rifle. One shot, one bunny, closed the door/window and pretended to be elsewhere while the cops prowled around looking for the 'gunner'. Later at night, she'd find and dispose of the carcass.

If the 'yotes are a threat to you, your kids, your pets or your other property, you have the right to end the threat. One shot, one 'yote, disappear. Dispose of later. Make a silencer if needed. Eventually there'll be fewer 'yotes competing for the limited food and they'll stay farther away from humans.

I'm in Illinois.

I think I must sit down and talk with the coyotes before I can shoot them. With attorneys of course.

If I don't they may own me and my property!!!!

Anyone think obama bussed them in to agravate me?

Break away Snares

Break away Snares are the best bet in your situation. They are cheap and easy to set up and readilly available at any sporting goods store. Steel traps are about a thing of the past. Breakaway means if a deer or bigger animal sets it off it will break free. Then you can just walk out and smack em in the head;)... ... ... ..... But I would rather call them in myself and get em with my 22-250. :-laf I have dozens of callers and a Foxpro which is my main yote getter nowadays. ;)

As Bil Engvoll cried, "Look around you man! They're everywhere!" (This was in response to his 4 Y. O. 's query as to where his IGJoes were. But it works for 'yotes, too. )

Around my uncle's house in No. Atlanta, GA, (across the river from Roswell), they've lost a number of cat to 'yotes.

They're like squirrels. If they're a nuisance, shoot 'em. But be a sport about it. One at a time. Give the rest a chance to decide to migrate to quieter, and safer, digs. Dad and I shot at least 20 squirrels here with his . 22. They learned to be respectful of people's property.

Oh, and these 'yotes' should not be confused with Toy Yotas; the latter are usually large enough to require a big bore to take down. :D
