Does actually need a lift pump, other than to prime?

I'm forced to drive the remainder of my trip with a failed FASS. Truck starts and runs normally. Rail pressure is normal. Inlet is 80*, outlet is 140*, and the hottest part of the body is 90*.

What should I be thinking about? The belly tank is always full because of an aux tank. I am also empty and cruising lightly.

I've heard you can just don't be racing any Powerjokes or Duratrashes on the way home. May want to bypass the fass for less restriction

The fass haw a bypass built in. I'm not sure if it still filters. I had to drive 30 miles once. I do have a 2 micron filter after fass.

When my fass went I kept driving my truck. It was during a huge snow storm and I had no choice because I had to plow snow with it. I tried to baby it as much as possible but thats not easy when plowing. I now made it possible to hook up my factory pump if that problem happens again. Id drive it if it was me.

Buy a can of starting fluid for emergency use, B/C if the truck stalls and air enters the line you will need to feather the engine with the starting fluid to get it running again, cranking RPMs may not work.

Starting doesn't seem to be an issue... of course the tank is "flooded", which would prevent the lines from draining.

I managed another 1000 miles today, and truthfully there is nothing that would clue you in that the lift pump isn't working. Still getting 20mpg, and it starts and drives normal... I don't know how it would act WOT, because I have been limiting the shifts to 2200rpm and cruising at 2000rpm (about 60 mph)... set the cruise and go.

I did try contacting some local diesel shops, but being I discovered the issue late Saturday night and nobody is open Sunday... I didn't get many replies!

You could just throw a Holley Blue pump inline and cover things better. It is probably not an issue since it is already rolling OK but you never know.

Made it home a few minutes ago... truck ran fine the entire trip. All told, probably about 2200 miles without a lift pump. I ran every terrain from the flatlands to the Wyoming mountains... not a hiccup. Today I had an instance where I needed a 2nd-3rd-4th gear WOT run, and there was absolutely hesitation or lack of power.

Everything appears normal... if I was to do it again, I would run with only the main tank (full) and leave the cap loose to prevent a vacuum.

Hopefully it caused no long-term damage. The AD should be here tomorrow.

Can I ask a stupid question???

If everything ran fine without the FASS, how did you know it was down? What symptoms prompted you to check it out?

Just curious. I am still running the stock pump on the filter housing and a spare pump in the toolbox, but was wondering what to look for other than a dead truck.

Thanks.

I have one of the "early" "new" FASS (the noisy "brushless" version)... which was very loud, heard even when the truck was running. I also have a pressure gauge. I noted the FASS wasn't running because there was no fuel pressure, found a bad fuse.

The "early" "new" FASS will bypass fuel, the reason my truck still ran... if you have a OE filter-mounted pump, the truck wont run if it fails.

The FASS wiring SUCKS... the fuse and relay are open to the elements (corrosion) and the low pressure light is powered by both the relay and fuse... if either fails, you don't get notification of a failed pump. Needless to say, I will fix this issue since a light grabs your attention faster than a gauge after driving 15 hours...

I think either I have a brush issue or a bearing issue... either the brushes are worn out or the bearings seized.

I received my AirDog 100gph... nice looking outfit, quite a bit smaller than the FASS. The instructions leave a little bit to be desired, good thing I remember how the FASS was installed.

The only thing I question is the mounting location... looks like I need to temporarily mount it with the hoses?
