Excessively black smoke! Why?

First I am sorry if this is posted elsewhere and I missed it, I am tired and depressed!!! Long story but here goes. Crank seal has been leaking for a few months, finally got time to take it to the shop to have them do it. Late afternoon shop calls me and wants me to stop by to see some broken gears..??? I ordered this truck in 2003, first diesel. It has been to the dealer maybe 6 times, and only twice for engine related one being a leaking CP3 pump I forget when that was but I think 60-70K, I have 177,000 trouble free miles on it now. Anyway I get to the shop and he shows me one tooth on the cam gear and one exactly opposite on the CP gear. He stated that it looks like who ever did the CP did not put the lock washer on it my guess on that is because the nut was snug right up on the shaft and you could see marks on the nut. I am trying to figure if I have been driving this thing for 70,000 + miles and didn't know this or it just happened on the way to the shop. I found a few online posting elsewhere that some guys have had the lock washer break off and drop into the gear assembly which is what this looks like because the cover is all marked up. TOO costly for me to have it fixed so I guess I'll spend the next few weeks trying to resolve this myself and hope and pray it didn't do any other damage.
Does anyone on here know where I can get replacement gears? I figure I need to get all of them, and hope the pump is okay. I also read where when this sometimes happens you get a whine, well I have had a whine for years thinking it was either the alternator or A/C bearing its more pronounced when cold weather comes but you can hear it all the time.

Thanks!!!

P.S. since this is my primary do you think it may do more damage if I keep driving it?

Sounds like it's time for a camshaft, tappets and a CP3 gear. Appears the dealer tech had an oopsie way back when but that ship has sailed. Have you the skills and a couple days to change a cam?

This is a first sighting for me. Been around here since before these trucks were born. I remember the leaky CP3's- mine was changed too.
Wow, the cam gear is pressed on/ part of the cam, right?
So sorry to read about this, but I guess it's possible.
If it's been happy but whiny for so long, why not just let it run?

The local heavy truck shop here in Medford, Ny says they have a procidure for removing and re installing the cam gear with out removing the cam. Not sure if it's approved but they say it works and have never had a failure....

Changing the cam gear can be done in the car by using a gear puller to remove and then heating gear in a oven to about 350 degrees and quickly install before it cools.Using a small toaster type oven that can be close to the engine will be required. This is not an approved method but is being done succesfully in many shops to save a ton of hours

Bob, is the gear/cam keyed? Dowel? I guess you just send it home- quickly.

Truthfully, you should change the gears. That is the correct answer. Now reality intrudes. If you don't see a pile of shavings in the bottom of the accessory cover and any damage on the other gears, replace the lock washer on the CP-3 and drive it. There is no telling how long it has been like this and it is still running. You could replace the CP-3 gear to be extra safe but if all that is gone is 1 tooth on the cam gear and you aren't working the tar out of the truck there is a good chance it will never be an issue. It is a judgment call for you but that would give you time to plan the fix to do it right.

I did see this procedure and I believe that's the way I am going to go. I think that I just lucked out!! My son's friend who is a dang genius and self made fabricator that loves rebuilding Cummins and rebuilding trucks said that he can do it.. He wasn't sure about pulling the cam gear but since my dad past away 3 years ago I got most of his tools. He was a Chrysler Master Mechanic, so I have several pullers and tons' of tools I'll never use nor know how to use so I am sure I have a puller that will work for this.

I am going to take a risk today as this freak snow storm is coming and need to be plowing but I will take it easy! Crossed fingers maybe make enough to pay him to fix it for me. :)

Thank you all for your input! it is greatly appreciated. If it lasts me another year I'll be getting a new one. Which brings me to another question and that is how are the automatics holding up these days? Mine is a NV5600 but I am getting old and might want to go to auto.

Even if you get the gear off you most likely will have to purchase a cam to get a new gear. Still saves you a bunch of work though.
