A very tragic incident occurred last week to one of my grand daughters’ friends. Her friend was on the tennis court doing wind sprints with her team mates and collapsed. Their coach was standing by and there were other people nearby. The irony of it all is that no one…not one single person did anything to help the 17 year old girl that was lying on the court and it took 20 minutes for the EMT’s to arrive at which point the child had already turned purple. Ultimately, she was taken to UCI med center and placed on life support, but it was too late, and after six days her parents signed the DNR.
For those of you that have children in sports, I implore you to make sure there is someone on site that is CPR certified during all activities.
I’m looking at a picture of my six children and grand children and I cannot imagine the pain.

Was this a school sport? The coaching staff at our local schools are required to be trained in first aid and CPR...having said that it doesn't guarantee someone will have the presence of mind to execute under stress.

My kids are in elementary school and things like this really hit home. I couldn't imagine the road her parents have ahead of them.

No, it was not a school sport. The incident happened happened at a private club. She, and my grand daughter graduated in June. None the less, they are still children with their life ahead of them.

In the 20+ years in the Fire/EMS game, I have unfortunatley seen this more than once. CPR is never a guarantee. But the quicker someone offers intervention, the better the chance of survival. I am also a strong advocate of having AED's in every school, business, church, etc. The chance of survival dramatically increases when there is an AED in use before one of us can get there.

I have taught many Fire and EMS courses over the years including CPR. Even with training, its not ucommon for people to freeze out of fear instead of acting quickly and efficiently. One of the guys we teach with has great saying to the people that are apprehensive about doing CPR....."When they hit the ground, they are dead. There's nothing you can do to make that worse"

Couldn't have said it better myself. 99.9% of most people with a CPR cert will not be sure what to do as they have no real life experience.

I'm starting to believe the push to have manditory EKG's for all children involved in sports. Several kids have dropped dead over the last decade because of an unknown issues such as enlarged hearts, unforseen holes in the heart, etc etc. We tend to think these kids are in perfect health because of their age but this isn't necessarily true.

On a sad note, I've been a PCF/AEMT for several years and the only person I've ever saved with CPR was a drowning victim. And even then, it wasn't a true MI event. All I did was help evacuate the lung of water through chest compressions which helped the lungs get back to normal operating conditions.

I took a CPR course my Church offered back in 2010 since I'm Head Usher at the Mass I attend and we have a lot of elderly people that attend (I thouhgt it come in handy at my business also). But we have kids that faint also. Lucky the Parish Nurse attends the same Mass. ( I need to get recertified).

Boy that is so sad!
I just got certified this past Monday night for CPR. I joined the local fire dept so am going thru the First Responder class. Am excited about being able to do this and give back to the community.

Good for you. I've been a PCF/AEMT for a long time. Always thought it would be fun to get hired full time but I've been self employed for so long and I make way more than the FD could ever pay. I'm at the engineer level so I get to do what the Captain's and Lt's do anyway; drive/operate the engine etc etc. Be safe.

A 20 minute response time for an ambulance is terrible unless this place is very rural. Someone should have done something. CPR isn't complicated, and they could have looked up the instructions on their phones.

That is what is so sad about this incident. The tennis club was in central Anaheim and I know for a fact the nearest fire station was less than one mile away.
