Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need some help here guys

hey guys, last week my check engine light came on, so i threw a code reader my dad has on the truck, and it says cam position. i talked to a buddy of mine who says his computer (he's a tech) claims the CPS is strictly diagnostic and it will not have any effect on the motor running. well, a couple days after the check engine light came on, my tach started dropping to 0, and the truck seemed to be in limp mode, no power. sometimes the tach works fine and i have ful power and sometimes it doesn't and i have no power. last night i was drivin back to school, and the truckstumbled 3 separate times, it seemed like the pump was not pushing fuel. is it possible that the CPS is causing this or do i have other problems besides? any help is appreciated

Tim

Our engines need the CPS to function properly. That's where the ECM gets all of its timing information from the engine that it needs to tell the VP44 injection pump what to do. And, as you have noticed, that's also what drives the tach.

i guess my big question is, is this thing gonna die on me when i drive home this weekend? i have about a 300 mile trip home tomorrow, but the part is waiting for me at home... or should i just buy a sensor up here, replace it and not have to worry about it... at least i have a heated shop at home...

99's use the crank sensor and I know some time after that it went to the cam sensor. I do not know what year that occurred. The cam sensor at least in 99 is for diagnostics only. If it were me I would change the part before the trip. It depends how much luck you have playing Russian Roulette. If it is a crank sensor it is not to bad to change, if it is a cam sensor I understand it is a pain in the butt.
