Exhaust Brake- whats the BEST one ? HELP

I was looking at my AFE filter the other day & noticed a crack about 2" long right at the base. It looked like it cracked as a result of bouncing around with out support under the main part of the filter.

Has anyone esle had this problem?

:--) Now you’re scaring me. I put mine on in October, and was a little concerned about the bouncing thing. It seems odd that the crack was on the bottom, or is it at the corner where it mates up with the intake portion of the heat shield, on top? We may need to get a hold of AFE about this, and check for updates or warranty on the “Lifetime” filter element. If all else, build a bracket to support the front.

The split on mine was at the top, inside the clamp, next to the base. I know I caught it before I sucked anything in, but since then I check it a couple of times a week just to be safe. I put a "shim" piece of foam under the filter to provide extra support. As you know, you can move the filter up and down some, so there is probably some vibration movement while running and therefore, stress.

aFe was very responsive and concerned. I sent the damaged filter back to them. Got a free t-shirt in the box with the new replacement.

I went to the AFE web site & they claim they have a "Limited Lifetime Warrentee" I'm not sure what this means, but I sent them an e-mail asking what to do. They also claim "The last filter your vehicle will ever need" on their web site, but I'm a little concerned about this also. I also ask them what to do in the future for some kind of support to keep this from happening again.

I'll keep you posted as to their reply.

The crack is right next to the band clamp that holds the filter on & at the top. It looks to me like the weight of the filter caused it to happen.

This happened to my original aFe and was replaced promptly by aFe. The crack did not go all the way through (therefore did not let in dirt). I drive on dirt roads daily hauling my tractor or bobcat to job sites and am very hard on filters. With 42lbs of boost, it is very hard to find a filter that will flow freely and keep out dirt. I have been testing aFe filters for some time and will soon be released to publish my findings. They do a lot of flow bench testing to provide a good filter, but as Nick Niakan (the president) says, there is nothing like real world testing to see just how well a filter performs. They are very interested in the real world applications.

I have been on a quest since 1997 to find the "best" filter and have tried almost all available in the past 6 years. Paper filters keep out the dirt but don't flow well, cloth filters flow well but don't keep out the dirt - until now that is. More when they say I can talk about what I found. It should be soon.

I sent an e-mail to AFE and a fellow by the name of Eric called me back.

He say's that the material they use in the filter is strong enough to hold up to any amount to shaking. He said that the only way it should crack is if some how it gets cut, then it will continue to crack from its own weight. He didn't think it should need any kind of support.

Bottom line is they are sending me a new replacement and ask that I send back the defective one after I receive the new one.

One comment he made which I wondered about is he claimed that they get around one a month back due to this problem, but said they also sell thousands a month.

Needless to say, I like the way they stand behind their product.
