On my 03 CTD I found my alternator bracket cracked right before I drove accross country last week. A friend welded it up and added some additional bracing since the dealer wouldn't see me for 2 weeks and I couldn't wait. Now I want to get the revised bracket but I'm curious if I'll be on the hook to pay for it since the TSB was issued for it. The dealer here in New Jersey said he had never heard of the TSB (imagine that) and even if there was one, since my truck now has 72000 miles it's out of warranty.

If its a TSB you'll have to pay for it since the truck is outa warranty. Also it highly unlikely that the dealer has never heard of a TSB since its dealers auto technicians and the company engineers that are making these reports! Curious where was said crack, this sounds like something I should check into.....

Chances are the welds will be fine for quite a while as he added extra metal plates for strength.

The crack was in the bend of the bracket where the bracket mates up with the engine block. It only affected a certain amount of 03's so if yours is a later model, you may be OK. I guess the new bracket is a cast piece but I haven't seen one yet. Just look closely at your bracket and if it's cracked you'll see it. I saw mine when I looked at it without a flashlight or taking anything apart. I bought the truck used so that was one of the things I knew to look at.

I would just keep using the welded bracket. Cost of bracket back in 06 was about $90! It was not covered under warranty according to my dealer, but I have heard of a few that talked the dealer into replacing it under warranty somehow. Never have heard of one actually breaking, but suppose would eventually. I had 152k on mine when I replaced it.
