My brother went to the dealer today and they told him that his tail housing has a hairline crack in it. He still has all the gears and says the transmission acts fine, so he does not think anything went wrong inside but who knows. dealer said air shipping tail housing from detroit over nite. $400 parts $250 labor. Any body ever have any problems with this please let me know. Thanks the truck is a 99 with a five speed. 48,000 miles. 3/4 ton quad cab. They said the fluid in it is some special stuff-$25 a quart!

Yes, the transmission is designed to use a special lubricant called GL-4. Check out www.dodgeram.org

for the specs on the 5-speed. Some folks prefer their favorite lubricant. Your mileage may vary.

You can replace the tailhousing with the trans in the truck, not that hard. Pull the drive shaft and mount bolts, remove speedo wire, remove about 8 bolts (12 point socket) and pull it off. Check 5th gear nut too.
