Hi all! My '95 truck w/105,000 miles started leaking oil big time. I took it to the local Dodge house and they suspected the crank seal to be leaking. I got an estimate of $275. 00 to repair and left it there for repairs. Then came the bad news. Turns out the timing gear cover is cracked and now the repair will be over $1800. 00. Seems they have to nearly disassemble the engine and remove all radiators, coolers, grill work etc. to get the camshaft out for the repair. I asked Daimler-Chrysler for assistance since the leak started on a 5,000 mile road trip and I didn't notice the leak until I returned home. (I had been parking the truck in the dirt on the farm). Anybody else had any similar experiences and am I asking too much for help on this matter? Daimler-Chrysler says flat out no way will they assist on this repair and that I should contact Cummins since they offer the 100,000 mile warranty (which I don't believe to be correct information).
TIA
Jay Merritt

Jay,

This one is a Cummins problem, but I think the warranty is thru DC. A few of our engines have a dowel pin that is not tight and will fall out. If it's tight you can't get it out with a pair of vise grips. This pin is located to you can't even check it without takeing the cam out, etc, etc,... When this pin falls out it breaks the timeing gear case and sometimes the gears. Until it is taken apart you won't know what all the damage is. It may have torn up other stuff. If all it did was crack the gear case you were lucky. Several months ago someone posted some pictures of his engine that this had happened to. Joe Donnelly is the guy to ask about this one.

Jay,

Bummer, Cummins should take care of this, if it is the pin problem, it is clearly a mess up in thier mfg. process.

if you dont mind, when was your truck built and where, some of us would be interested as to how close the date is to ours.

Good Luck,
Randy
