crank crank crank -- update - dead vp44

Help.

Truck has been running fine until now. Have FP gauge installed at vp44. Have had good pressure 14-15lbs at idle. Tonight truck wouldn't start. Crak crank crank and nothing. Had normal fuel press. readings, could hear lp running, and had fuel at Water separator drain. no codes on odo readout. :(

waited 45 minutes and it fired right up. Took it around the block and the tack surged a bit at a stop sign. got onit a bit and it ran well with good fuel press but died as soon as I slowed up. Wouldn't start. However, now my gauge is reading like 18 (only goes to 15) it has never been that high before. Watied a few mnutes and it started bu died when I dropped into gear. damn.

94,674 miles. still on warranty I hope.

Any thoughts before I flat bed this thing to a dealer.

feel free to call anytime at 503-519-4312 or post here

thanks guys.

Sorry, its late here and I missed that in your first post.

How about cracking open #1 injector line to check for fuel? 19mm wrench just barely open it, if fuel squirts the VP should still be at least somewhat functional.

Boost pressure good - blown hose?

Electrical working when it won't start - you mentioned the tach jumped when it acted up - my Cam Position Sensor failed on me once in the '01 I had - truck would still run, but in "limp" mode.

What have you done to the truck recently... ..... my thinking that maybe a MAP sensor has loosened up if you've taken the air inlet tube off - something like that type of trouble?

White smoke when it's not firing and just cranking over and over? (fuel is getting into the cylinders then)

more info

Thanks for the replies

to answer some questions.

I havn't done anything but fluids and filters in the last 10K and have had no problems at all with good mpg. had it on the highway today and had full power.

Tonight after the first no - start episode it was not running in limp mode - had strong accelleration off the line without hesitation or misses.

All electrical seems normal. no codes or MIL.

Tomorrow morning I'll crack an injecor line and see if it spits go-juice.

What problems could be at the root of this. I don't want to pay dealer diagnostics but don't have a lot of time to mess around.

Thanks again

24v no start

I have been fighting one just like yours but mine would only start if the temp outside was below 50f and then it would only run for a few mins. I think your has a bad crank sensor. I am going to try that for mine and see what happens, it is the cheapest part to try first, just a pain to get to behind the starter, next to the dipstick tube.

I will keep watchin this post because it sounds oh too familiar.

Dieseltim

Classic symptoms of a dead CPS. They die and leave no codes. There was a handoff in years where these engines went from using a crank sensor to a cam sensor, but when they die, the same symptoms occur.

Crank crank crank dead VP44

I'd say your VP44 is history. Fuel pressure went up cause the fuel is not getting past the VP$$. Lift pump is pumping against the blockage. Hopefully your dealer will replace under warranty.

Good luck

tractorface got it right

Thanks to everyone who helped out on this. No joke, it's really good to know so many people are out there and want to help when there's a problem.

to continue the story,

Got up this morning and it fired right up but pressures were high again. Called rip and he said take it in and see what's up. Dealer is only 4 miles away and about halfway there as things warmed up the engine would falter at stops. Died in a busy intersection, restarted and would only stay running if I put it in gear with a heavy foot. Finally died again while moving as I pulled up to dealership. Left it dead in the service driveway.

Within 30 minutes thay told me a dead VP44, (odo finally showed 1693 companion code but dealer tool gave death code) is covered under warranty and should have new one in by tomorrow.

We'll see how it goes. I feel lucky, only 6k of warranty left:)

thanks again

It's fixed

Got it back today! Timberline Dodge turned it around in one day. 100% under warranty. runs great and I swear it sounds better now with a nice strong rattle:)

4500 miles and then it's time for some transmission work, injectors, and a box. I accept cash, check, and paypal

Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

I had a bus with a 24v. the bus stopped running. when the drive tried to restart it, it would surge and die. Endded up sending it to the dealer. No codes. the replaced the ecm. nothing, wireing harnes fuel pump. after a mounth the tech got pistoff at cummins and stated unplugging sensors. it was one of the sensors. i thank it was the boost?
