Alright so my truck has not been itself lately and finally the check engine light came on after I looked and looked for a problem!!! the crank position center went out I went and got one from my local oreilys and brought it home I cannot even get over the hurdle of the starter I trued using a 12 point 10mm socket to get them off but cannot does any body have any answers for me the one is so close it is hard to even get a socket on it!!! I need help!!!

Don't know about your '99 but I would think it has to be in the same place as my '05. Look from below at the harmonic balancer, there is a toothed ring on it. The sensor reads the gaps. On mine it is held on by one torx screw. The connector is a little of a task. First you move one lock so you can slide the main lock.

But all in all its about a 10 minute job on my truck, if that long!

You need to remove the starter to pull the sensor in and out of the block. Be cautious with the oreilly sensor, I did not even get a year out of mine. I now only use genuine cummins sensors. They are actually about the same price or cheaper here Welcome to HOESLIDIESEL. COM

if the light is just blinking on once in awhile not staying on am I gonna be okay for about a week? could this be causing it to run a little rougher and upset my fuel economy a little bit?
