 crank sensor broke off and rusted in place. I have been spraying with wd-40 all day and dug all around it with an ice pick but it still wont come out. Am I missing something here or is this thing a major PITA. I need some good ideas. Thanks in advance.

Sensor could be damaged inside the crankcase due to the tone wheel coming apart. Seen it a couple times. It's more common than you think. It's one of the reasons they eliminated the sensor on the 01-02 trucks. Hopefully its just a swollen o-ring and it comes out without any other issues.

If the tone wheel is damaged then would the engine run or could it run ok sometimes and not others? There is a lot of rust around the sensor I hope its just stuck and not a damaged tone wheel.

Like Josh said, and try wiggling it (rotating in the hole back and forth as you pull out) not too far, just enough to help you feed some penetrating oil in and pull. WD is good stuff, try something designed specifically for penetrating too. When you do get it out make sure you use some anti-seize when you install . . . just in case. I got mine out in one piece but it took about 45 minutes convincing it - real PIA. #@$%! Good luck

Finally got enough time off work to fix this thing. I used a 1/4 inch lag bolt and a 1 inch socket to pull the sensor out . Rust and a dry sensor was what was holding it in place. Replaced sensor put her all back togother all works good. Thanks for all the input.
