Yesterday while driving the check engine light came on,everything seemed fine so i went to autozone today and had it scanned. Showed crank sensor but the light went out after i left. Anything to worry about? Thanks Randy

i thought mine was simple. turned out to be a loose sensor ring on the crankshaft. quite a nightmare. the ring broke off. i had to pull the engine to fix it. sensors can go bad. wiring problems or connections.

Mine was replace earlier in the year, started the same way engine light, and would go off after so many cycles of the key. Cant remember the code but when the guy finally got the CPS out of the block (the old one was siezed up) the end looked chewed up, the sensor went bad and im guessing decided it couldn't hold up any longer but i was a month getting to that, if it continues and is the Crankshaft positioning sensor it will eventually shut your truck down until it is replaced. Got mine from the dodge dealer, 63$ with tax.

It is behind the starter and once the starter is removed it "SHOULD" come out real easy. One bolt holding a retainer. Mine was easy but some have reported it being siezed and a PITA to get out. Mine crapped out and I didn;t have ANY symptoms. I replaced it anyway...

the starter will have to be removed, On mine the sensor was siezed in the block(i wouldn't believe it either but i saw it first hand) the mechanic when trying to remove it broke it in half then tapped it with a long sheet metal screw in order to get the rest out of the block. If anyone would have told me plastic would cement to a block like that i would have said your nutz, but then again it could have been that from the factory some type of antiseize compound is used so that don't happen and mine was overlooked, just something to think about if your going to replace it yourself.

The part from the dealer was $63 and some odd cents not bad at all. But if you can get it from a cummins dealer cheaper thats the way to go, i had no choice as the closest Cummins dealer to me that had one on hand was in Charlotte NC. and that was going to be 3 days for shipping.

Good luck with the replacement

mine was siezed also. actually it would spin but the rubber seal wouldnt move. i drilled a hole through it and used an extractor.

Don't wait to long. When mine started it got progressively worse. I made it about 3 weeks but that would depend on your everyday mileage. Luckily I ordered it when it first happened and had the sensor when it finally gave up. The starter bolts can be a pain to get out as mine acted as though they were seized but finally broke loose with a 1/2" ratchet.

Cps

Yep, it was a PITA! My CEL came on too. I went to Autozone & they retreived the CPS code. Local Cummins shop didn't have one in stock (2 days out) so I went to the dealers... If I remember right there was about a $40 difference between the dealers  . . I paid about $70 for mine.

Once I got it, (CPS) I removed the starter & then the fun began! Same as others have stated. It was ready to come out but sure as heck didn't want to! This particular sensor can "require" a little bit of patience as it's in the block & you don't want to drop it or break it inside the block. Mine would spin & turn freely but just did not want to come out. I believe I played with mine for 30-40 minutes before it finally came out.

Good luck & take your time.

Light came on again this afternoon, lasted one start cycle then went out again. I guess i had better order one on monday. Randy

Well i got that sensor changed out today. I took David's advice and called Hoesli diesel. They had it for 37 dollars and change. They must have some guy that gets mad and turns Green to put those starter bolts in. After i got the starter off the sensor came out fairly easy. Thanks guys,Randy :D

Glad to hear it is fixed. What was your mileage when this happened?. Mine went at 55k, 2k after the 53 went.
