Crank sensor-- Need a definition

Ive got a P0336 code. Ive already figured that I need to get a new crank sensor, but this one isnt but a year old and not many miles.

I poked around on a search for the 336 code and it sounds like im not the first one to have multiple failures. Is this the onset of a new 24v plague?

My main question though, out of curiosity is just what exactly does this code mean? yeah I know Crank position sensor A ckt range/ performance.

Out of range?? Reduced Performance??

PS havent even opened the hood yet as the wind here was at a brisk 1000MPH or so and the little snow flakes were like needles piercing the flesh.

Possible there is a bad connection, kind of why Im askin what range/perf means... .

Mine crapped out last week. It was the first, and I have 72k miles. I had absolutly no indication of a bad sensor except for a MIL (light came on). Reading here it seems the worst case is the Cummins shuts down. I spend LOTS of time in the boondocks so I just replaced it. Not hard, but cost $78. 00 out the the door from Dodge. Cummins need the engine ID# and I needed the sensor ASAP.

mine went out just shy of 200,000mi back in august just replaced it on saturday it was 53 something from the dealer and so far so good.

well this time its somewhat intermitent, but both time I had MIL and loss of tach.

plongson-- your eng. no. is stamped on the data plate in front of the inj. pump. Im guessing you werent near the truck when ordering parts?

Cummins bridgeway had it last time for like $45, heading over on lunch right now. Hopefully its still close to that... ...

"... what happens when the crank position sensor goes out?... '

Mine started with an intermittant check engine light, cleared itself read the code 0336.

Then the check engine light stayed on longer cleared itself with a number of restarts (5?).

Got progressively more check engine lights, then the tach started dropping out intermittantly, got codes cleared @ AutoZone, kept repeating, etc.

Changed it before it got worse! Cummins quoted $45 plus a 10 day delivery time?, Dodge was $60 but had it in stock. As doing a lot of long distance driving bought the dodge and changed it out.

Changing should have been a snap , but as drive in winter snow/SALT country, the corrision around the sensor (ouside the 'O' ring) created some issues. Not hard but busting through the corrision without doing damage, took a while! :( Now I know why the holdown bracket was chromed :-laf .

Without salt/corrosion issues on the block would have been a snap, just had to remove starter also.

I changed mine last Saturday, $47. 00 from Cummins. I'm not sure if it had been changed before. I bought the truck with 70 some thousand miles and now it has 83K.

Piece of cake to change thankfully. I read a few things about guys having all sorts of problems with them. Luckily mine just poped out and the new one went right in.

You've gotta love these engines. If you have to replace something its usually not to bad to get at.

When mine failed the tach pionts to zero and MIL comes on. PS-- if it is in fail condition when you shut down, chances are you wont start it again. I also noticed the engine went to limp mode when the fault code was active (no tach)

My new sensor was $45 + tax roughly and all is well now, But Im still looking for some rhyme or reason for the "range/performance" part of the 336 code. I would like to figure out the cause of the failure.
