If the dealer told you that the crank position sensor set a code, it is easy to replace. I went round and round with the dealers but finally came up with the correct part number (see below). Replacing the part takes about thirty minutes: unhook both batteries, drop the starter, remove one bolt and the sensor wire, replace the sensor and everthing else in reverse.
My truck would stumble severely and rpm's would drop to zero which happend 3-4 times in as many days. It completely died one time
before I installed the part.

Crankshaft Position Sensor - Chrysler Part #05015488AA (45. 00)
The part is not listed for a 1999 and probably not for a 1998 either. It is listed for a 2000.
Cummins lists the Part #4002066 (34. 00) which is engraved on the sensor. They also list Part #4002064 which is probably the sensor for the automatic.
