Need some help
Does anyone know what a Crank Sensor is,what it does, & where it is located.
My check engine light came on & took it to dealer, there answer wasn't to my liking.

I don't know much about Cummins, but: Most ECM equiped engines nowdays use a sensor that tells the ECM the location of the crankshaft at any time for timing purposes. It usually sends pulses due to something similar to gear teeth passing by the sensor. I believe Cummins has moved this sensor from the crank to the camshaft in current engines, which tells me they may have had a problem with the crankshaft sensor location.

You might want to contact member 243. I believe he had the same problem back around May 25th. #ad

As far as I can Tell the crank sensor is needed for the tachometer and possibly the cruise control and maybe for some info on the automatic trans (not sure about the trans)

My father has a 98. 5 24 valve and his crank sensor went out about a year ago. You loose the spedo, cruise control, and believe it or not all the other gauges on the dash. Once the sensor was replaced everyting worked fine. The truck actually got better mileage with the sensor out, but not having a spedo was bothersome.

If the dealer told you that the crank position sensor set a code, it is easy to replace. I went round and round with the dealers but finally came up with the correct part number (see below). Replacing the part takes about thirty minutes: unhook both batteries, drop the starter, remove one bolt and the sensor wire, replace the sensor and everthing else in reverse.

My truck would stumble severely and rpm's would drop to zero which happend 3-4 times in as many days. It completely died one time
before I installed the part.

(from previous thread)

Crankshaft Position Sensor - Chrysler Part #05015488AA (45. 00)
The part is not listed for a 1999 and probably not for a 1998 either. It is listed for a 2000.

Cummins lists the Part #4002066 (34. 00) which is engraved on the sensor. They also list Part #4002064 which is probably the sensor for the automatic.

Hope this helps,

where is the crank sensor on a 97. Have looked up front, can see the wires going but don't see a sensor
I have replaced my crank senser (sometimes called ESS Engine Speed Senser) on my 97 3500 4x4. It is a magnetic type senser with 3 leads and it can be found mounted (with a gap of 0. 050 inches) above the crank damper. It gets 5 volts from the PCM and the 3 pin plug has a 1. ) a GND lead and 2. ) an output lead to the PCM for supplying pulses everytime the gap in the crank damper passes it and 3. ) 5 vdc from the PCM.

It is a black oblong thingy about 3 inches by 1 inch and is bolted to a bracket I believe. It has about a 3 foot wire harness on it that is plugged in near the oil fill plug on top the engine and the pigtail wire harness is close to the water pump.

Use a business card or piece of matchbook cover to set the gap at 0. 050 inches... its not too critical.

If I can find a pic I will show you.

Thanks, and I found it. My tach is not working, dash lights come on, and wont shift to overdrive. going to try to clean it and maybe price a new one.

My tach works and it does the occasional stumble. . no codes and no light Check engine light. . I am going to replace the map and the IAT sensor as it hasn't been replaced since new. . I got recently the APPS from timbo and 14K ago, new VP44. so wondering why, when it is warm, around 1500 rpm, it stumbles like someone just let up on the throttle all of a sudden.
