i am a new cummins owner and i have a problem , i hope someone can help . i have 99 1 ton w/ about 172,000 miles on it . the problems i have is as follows , c. e. l. is w/ crank shaft sensor code , alt. does not charge , on start up tach jumps around then sets on 0 and it runs smooth . i found out the tone ring on the crank has come loose . also does the crank sensor have a paper washer on the top of it because mine does . i think someone shimmed it out to keep the tone ring from hitting it . also has any done this repair in the truck . i really need some input . thanks for your time .

My 98. 5 didn't have a paper washer. They probably did try to shim it. Getting the oil pan off will probably be difficult. I would like to know how bad a job that is myself. Have 327K miles and wondered if I could remove the pan and replace the bearings without removing the engine.

still need to know how hard it will be to do this job it the truck and if it is possible . i going to attempt it a week or so . so any info will be a great help . thanks for the input .

I've herd that if you hold your mouth right you can sneak the oilpan off a 2 wheel drive without pulling the engine.

Yes it can be done in the truck. (I've done it) The engine can be raised enough to get the pan out the back. Once the engine is raised as high as you can get it and the pan is dropped, you have to reach in and unbolt the oil intake suction pipe and let it down into the pan, then slide it out the back. The tone ring has flat head allen screws. Clean it real good. Torque the screws to 71 inch pounds and use Loctite 242 (blue) on them. Suction tube and pan bolts are all 18 foot pounds. Not the most pleasant job but beats the heck out of dropping the transmission and transfer case, unless of course one has a lift and transmission jacks, and then it might be a toss up. Can be done in half a day or so.

Yes, Vaughn, you only need to just loosen the motor mount bolts because the frame mounts are slotted. Other things you need to do are take the intake boot off the air horn, the exhaust loose from the turbo, and take the fan off (left hand thread) and leave it lay in the shroud. That's all I recall, but take a good look and see if anything else might interfer. I jacked the engine up from the bottom because I didn't have an engine hoist at the time. The engine hoist would make it easier. Take the time to clean as much mud and dirt from the bottom so the stuff isn't falling on you and in the oil pan. I replaced the pan because of a damaged drain hole while I was at it. The gasket was rubber and I reused it and it doesn't leak. I had a new one just in case. The new one was cork and pretty spendy so I got to return it. I put the pan in a garbage bag to keep it clean while fishing it back in. Don't forget to put the intake pipe back in the pan before you slide it in. I guess that's all I can think of now. Good luck.

i could not imagine doing it in the truck. im sure it is possible. but i had enough time replacing mine with the engine out. if you are replacing the tone ring, you will need to pull the number six rod cap. push the piston all the way up. pull the number six main cap. remove the upper piece of the bearing, because it is the thrust bearing. then you can move the crank just enough, and with a slight tweak the tone ring will pop in. just as Kwentling said clean those holes. use loctite 242(blue) and torque them to 71 inch pounds. hope it goes well. and by the way you have to love an oil pan that has 36 bolts in it.

i had always heard about this site but i am really impressed with all the help and info i received here . once again a big thanks goes out to everyone . and i will post my results when i get the job gone . thanks

once again thanks to everyone on the sight that helped . i finished up today and everything went great . i have done a lot harder jobs then this , it was not that bad at all . so if anyone else has any questions just ask . thanks

start to finish about 4 hours . there really wasn't to much to it . it is pretty straight forward just like kwentling said . people i talked around here maid me think it was going to take 20 hours .

The small screws holding the tone ring to the crankshaft are known to strip and/or break off. So be careful and take your time!

Kcole, engine has gotta come out for main and road bearing replacement. Rods you could maybe do in the rig, but man what a pain! Plus, with all those miles on yours, it might be a good time to freshen up the engine anyway. Or... . Just wait until something goes bad. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :D
