Today in Diesel class we learned about crankcase explosions. The instructor mentioned that it particularly happens in larger displacement engines and marine applications. I'm just curious if this ever has happened in a light duty high performance application?

sorry, cant give an attachment, but marinediesels.co. uk under horror stories in the left bank.

I was at a truck pull over labor day weekend, some guy put a cummins in a ford and near the end of the pull it went BOOM!!! They said you could fit your head in the side of the block

I am not sure if that is what happened to the truck, but a cummins truck blew a hole in the side of the block drag racing at the Scheids event this year.

Remember years ago working on tug boat with big marine engines. they had several large crankcase doors which were spring loaded. If explosion happened the doors would pop open to relieve the pressure. Neve actually seen it happen .

They mentioned that it was mainly in the large displacement, particularly marine applications. I was just curious... Smaller diesels like the 5. 9 12valve have the same problem?
