How much Smoke should come from the crankcase vent?

I have the bottle removed and a hose down behind the axle,

There is visible smoke venting at Idle , The wind was blowing from the rea &

when I opened the hood, thought I had an oil leak on the turbo area,

but after inspection, it appeared to be coming up from the vent hose...

( was doing some 4th gear max Boost runs just before stopping and opening the hood )

I have mine vent running just behind the front drivers tire and at stop lights i can see puffs of smoke come up from next to my window. I ask a couple diesel guys and they said its fairly normal. I dont have oil dripping out of it though, some guys said theirs dont smoke a whole lot but they get oil drips out of the tube.

no smoke but have a drip when it sits. I asked this b4 I got a diesel and someone wrote me back a technical way to test it, but way too technical. You put a tee on the hose with a drilled preset orifice size and check the pressure build up and can get cummins specs for your answer is there too much. I may be able to find it But only if you need it. The truck I was looking at was smoking way too much and was a piece of crud and I moved on. This one is I have not noticed any smoke but a little is ok. ED

If you want to know what kind of shape your engine is in take to a Cummins shop they will run a blowby test. This will tell you if it is with-in spec or out and by how much. They will use a fixed orifice and a manometer on a dyno preferably.

I have 3 different engines by 3 different manufacturers all have vent hose all emit vapor and all mark their spot. The 6. 2 probably has the most vapor but does not drip any more than the others. The motori also has a lot of vapor, more than the cummins.

Some of this vapor is water the rest is stuff that you do not want to stay in your engine.

If you have excessive oil from the vent it could be a sign of a problem on the other hand the old detroits would blow a quart or so a day and everyone said it was normal.

on my 91 i had a flatbed and i welded a 1" pipe on the headache rack behind the cab and ran the vent all the way back there ... it was right beside my door and while at idle i poured a steady haze of smoke ...

i had an 1/8" weep hole at the lowest point and the smoke still ran out ... at 275k i sold the truck and the guy who bought it chuckled and asked if that amount of blowby was normal ... i told him it was at 75k ...

on my '01 i bought the truck at 89k with the whole front of the motor soaked with oil from the overflow bottle ...

i took the bottle off and made a T with 3/4" hose dumped into each fender right behind the headlights ...

that night at an idle with the headlights on you could see smoke at both lights ...

now at 160 it hasn't changed a bit ...
