I traded an'01 for an'03 and I am curious. Compared to a second gen, my '03 seems like it cranks forever before it will fire. One time it seems like it turns over 3-4 times before it will fire and the next, it seems closer to ten revs. Are the HPCR motors similar to the Powerstroke for startup? I've been told that the powerstroke has to build oil press. before it will fire, is this new truck similar( I know it isn't oil press. in our case but could it be fuel press issue)?

You probably missed it, but this has been discussed on here before. It's normal, and has to do with a sensor that detects the engine turning and getting everything ready to fire. I also had an 01, and it was a little un-nerving at first. Not a problem.

The engine has to crank a bit to get the HPCR pressure built up, and then it has to wait for a certain cylinder to be in position before it gets the "GO" signal. That's why it takes as little as 3-4 compressions to as many as 8-9 to fire off.
