I am having a crankshaft installed at the end of my warranty. My question is this: The install of the gear. I can find nothing in my dodge service manual on this, and my mechaninc sez he had to call cummins, who asked about equipment he aint got. The deal is the gear has to be heat soaked for 4 hours at 250 degrees before the install. Cummins told him they use a toaster oven for on the road repairs. Is this a chrysler approved thing, or should I cry foul? This happens in the morning!

Thanks in advance!

That's exactly how I put the carrier bearings in my dana 60 on my Jeep. Just make sure the old lady's out off the house before using the oven :-laf

250° is low enough it won't affect the heat treating of the gear & is high enough to cause it to expand. This is pretty standard procedure for installing a press fit item, without a press.

I trust my mechanic, he is real good. . But with a resource like this, I had to check. . Thanks so much for your help!!

Oh, and by the by it's the service manager's toaster oven, so we will see if his wife notices. :-laf
