So I tore into the beast today to check if I have to worry about the KDP. Fortunately I do not, I have the new style case even though my engine was made in early 1999. But I have the Cummins front seal (part #3804899) & I'm not quite sure how to install it. It comes with the seal, a metal ring to use for installation, a rubber ring, and a clear plastic cylinder which I believe is the seal pilot. According to the service manual I use this to align the seal with the crankshaft. My question is- do I leave this on or do I somehow remove it after everything is aligned. Also what is that rubber ring that comes with the seal?

Thanks a lot,

Brian in NH

The plastic cylinder slips over the end of the crank and is used as a guide to slide the seal onto the crank so that the sealing lip doesn't get rolled under. Once the seal is in, pull the tube out. The metal ring is used to pound the seal in (a surface to pound on that it) and doubles as a depth stop because it will bottom out on the crank when the seal has reached the proper depth. I never did figure out what he other rubber ring does, I've never used it so I assume it's packaging :confused: Hope this helps.

The other ring is a dust seal, that installs before the dampener goes on. you don't have one installed from the factory, so don't worry about it.

Good to know, does it spin with the crank, slide in after the crank seal or mount in the balancer?

Scott;

It just goes in behind the seal, does not spin. there is room in there for it. you don't have to put it in.
