hey guys i am getting ready to do my (CKP) on my 99. Do i need to remove the starter to change it? or is there enough room there to remove it? i looked at my service manual and it does not specify if you have to remove the starter or not. I am replacing it because of code P0336 and my truck not wanting to start a few days ago. any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Unhook pos batt cable. Drop starter leaving cables attached. change sensor. replace starter and reconect batt. 15 min job

Yup. Worst case is the sensor breaks totally off and you'll need to jam a screw in to pull it out. It will probly break some anyway, but with a little care and finess she'll pop right out.

a 3rd on drop the starter. Also I happened to have a wobble socket extension that came in real handy to get to the bolts.
I disconnected batts and removed cables from starter just to make it easier for me... changed a starter on friends '02, in that case it took me more time to get the little rubber (which had changed to some kind of ceramic consistency from oil and fuel dripping on it) cover off the batt. term. on the starter than it took to R&R the starter.

cool thanks for the info guys.

do you mean a universal? to get to the starter bolts? if i remember the top one is the hard one to get to right?

thanks for all the info guys. yes you definitely have to drop the starter and thats not as bad as it seems. I just used an open end wrench and small pipe for leverage on the 3 starter bolts. while i was down there and the starter was out of the way i replaced the much superseded 3 prong oil pressure sending unit with a new one, the old one had given me trouble a few days ago with a check engine light. also much much easier with the starter out of the way to change :) thanks again for all your help!

Is the new oil pressure sender also 3 pin? Or a 2 pin switch? I've herd software upgrades turn the oil press. sender into an "idiot light" functionaly. How'd it work out with sender upgrade and no software change?

Yes it was the 3 pin sending unit not the "switch" the part number on the box from Cummins is part number 5012991. I had a buddy that works for dodge order it for me. He said the original had been superseded like 10 times lol but he got me what I needed the actual 3 pin sending unit requiring no reflash. Just plug and play :) he said that for a while people would complain about the gauge moving around from idle to highway speeds and back. Not sure if that's why they were superseded but I am sure that did not help. Also refer to issue 58 page 30 for more info about this issue. Hope that helps!
